Review: Vaccine @ Turnmills

Lucky, lucky us. London is now probably better for trance than anywhere else in the UK. Established nights TranceGeneration, Knowwhere, and the techier sounds of Serious jostle for position with intermittent events such as Crasher, Wildchild and the like. Smiley, euphoric Ultra Utopia appears to have fallen at the first fence but two newcomers have appeared in the field this month, and their coats look mighty glossy. Next weekend sees Ascension at Vauxhall’s Club Supreme (now called The Factory I believe), boasting an impressive pedigree in the shape of HF favourite Adam White, fresh from success in the 2004 Trance Awards. First up of these thoroughbreds, however, was Vaccine at Turnmills, prancing from the stable with production talents Corderoy and Goldenscan in the saddle. And frankly, in the Thursday night entertainment stakes, it was Vaccine first… the rest nowhere.
Vaccine is held in the Annexo bar at Turnmills, and includes the floor above the bar, housing a few tables, a small DJ booth and dinky dancefloor. First up was Mike Foyle - winner of the vaccine mix competition (whatever that is). He was faced with the difficult job of motivating punters on a Thursday from making the transition from casual drinkers to clubbers, and so very sensibly kicked off with something house in pace… but trance in work ethic. As his hour and a half set went on, it all got a bit busier until we reached a laidback, progressive trance sound.
Corderoy - the two brothers behind colossal tracks ‘Sweetest Dreams’ and ‘Deeper’ were up next. In keeping with Mike’s policy of not frightening the horses, they kicked off with a very cool, funky, progressive, sound - still nice and pacy though. Theirs, in fact, was unquestionably the set of the night. At that kind of event, with lots of people at tables rather than on the dancefloor with pupils like two pence coins, they couldn’t go anthemic, nor could they go experimental… so they played trance, but with a funky, progressive edge… and it worked a treat. It was an absolutely perfectly pitched set for the event, including some fat tunes like Dogzilla’s ‘Pure Filth’ remix of Ernesto vs Bastion - ‘Dark side of the Moon’. These guys deserve serious success – they write great tunes, and they’re talented and sophisticated DJs. If I had a club night I’d book ‘em… plus of course they’re both quite cute, and that‘s never a bad thing. In fact Vaccine had more than its fair share of hot guys, and although my gaydar is non existent, most of them looked straight.
Corderoy
Next up was Ben Beaton, Vacinne resident, who went a bit slower and a bit tougher. Still a very well received set though, including Ferry Corsten - ‘Punk’, Ferry’s remix of F Massive - ‘Somebody’, and Jose Amnesia - ‘The Eternal’ (Pulser remix). Rounding off the night was Tom Lindley, one of three twenty-somethings behind Goldenscan, the production team responsible for ’Sunrise’ and ’Of Our Times’. Tom took no prisoners early on by dropping as his first track a punchy, low-slung beast called ‘Let’s Get Dirty‘ from Pig & Dan, featuring the unequivocal lyrics ‘lets get dirty… lets get fucked‘. His very cool, varied set also included Vercetti – ‘In Control’, a brilliant, urgent, unusual track.
I wish Vaccine all the luck in the world… but I can’t help worrying. Who really goes out for a big night on a Thursday? Ok… loads of people end up having a big night on a Thursday but who actually sets out to get buckled? Student and city boys, that’s who. I’m not sure students can afford the drinks in Turnmills and city boys aren’t interested in trance - they’re too busy having competitions to see who can tie the fattest knot in their tie and hoovering up coke off rentboys. Allegedly. I’m wondering what kind of crowd Vaccine are aiming for. If it’s real music fans, perhaps the way forward would be to showcase new, young talent, or maybe producer-type people who don’t command big fees because no one outside DJs and true trainspotters has heard of them. On the plus side, as it’s a Thursday I can kind of imagine Vaccine ending up a bit of an industry haunt. I can’t think DJs get many Fridays or Saturdays off.
Anyway, we’ll see. If you are a trance fan it definitely deserves a visit. Vaccine one hundred percent deserves to do well, and if there’s any justice in the world, it will. It’s certainly the best time in the last few years for a night like this to kick off. Comrades… vote ‘trance’ on 5th May.
