Shaf de Bass & Eduardo Herrera get ready for their b2b set @ the Tasty House of Fun

Shaf de Bass and Eduardo Herrera are both legends of the underground in their own right. Both have played more parties than many more established djs could shake a stick at, and both are known for their energy and enthusiasm behind the decks and passion for their art. But like most heroes of the scene they do more than just play records: both are successful promoters, with Eduardo being the founder of Mix Bazaar, a massive fashion, arts and electronic music festival in his native Brazil, and both have dabbled in production, with Shaf taking this even further and founding his own Oblivion label. Perhaps it was only a matter of time before these two would battle it out behind the decks... Billy 'Daniel' Bunter has a chat with the boys before unleashing them to play a world exclusive back to back at the forthcoming Tasty House of Fun party on Saturday 12 March.
How did you first get into djing & how long have you been professionally djing for now?
SHAF
I learnt to mix using my friend’s decks and his house and garage records. I then left it for a little while and it was only when Logic started that I asked if I could play some of the warm up sets on Saturday mornings to gain some experience… suddenly I was playing at Fevah, There @ Heaven and all over. I've been playing on the circuit for about 5 and a half years now.
EDUARDO
I was taken to a disco in 1978 by my cousin; she was a friend of the dj, so I had my first contact with the dj world at that time… from then on playing records became my biggest passion in life.
How would you describe your music styles?
SHAF
Depends on the venue, party, crowd and time. I’ll play anything from tough funky chunky beats, bouncy/uplifting hard dance, to filthy driving “beats a poppin’” hard house.
EDUARDO
Funky, filthy and dark.
Collectively, you both have a very broad spectrum of music you play in your sets, from funky house, to uplifting trance and driving techno. Can we expect some thing very fresh from your back to back at Tasty?
SHAF
Yes… I look forward to playing with someone as versatile as Eduardo. It means that we can both get stuck in and break the rules when it comes to categorising music into genres – hopefully our set will be impossible to put into any one set genre as we’ll be chopping and blending some funky rhythms with some tough energised beats. You’ll have to be there to see what I mean.

This back to back has never been done before, so expect the unexpected!
Who has had the biggest influence on your direction and style?
SHAF
Various artists, djs, bands, clubbers, you name it. Inspiration comes from the most random of places and people and is always best when you’re not particularly looking. I’ve got a notepad almost full of ideas for tracks, remixes, bootlegs and even ideas for parties, that when I have time I hope to put into action.
EDUARDO

You are both very respected and liked characters & djs within the London clubbing scene. Did you ever feel that you would receive that much respect from both clubbers and djs/producers/promoters alike?
SHAF
It is nice to feel liked and respected and I think it’s got something to do with generally being upfront and honest with people.
I consider myself approachable and as long as the person isn’t too sweaty I’m always happy to have a chat, however random the subject. If I’ve got a problem I’ll tell someone and I expect the same in return. Treat others how you would like to be treated and everyone’s happy (unless you’re into weird shit and you like to abuse yourself). I’ve got loads of respect for everyone that contributes to any underground music movement, from promoters and djs to clubbers to venue owners, as long as in return, they respect the people that pay their wages.

I think we are so lucky to have the chance to be heard in a place where every DJ is so amazingly talented.
Many people are saying hard dance is dead, what would you say to those people?
SHAF
Those are usually people that have had enough and are fed up themselves. They don’t have fun anymore and the drugs have ceased to work. It’s time for them to move on.
Anyone doubting the ‘life’ of the scene should just pop their head into any Tasty, Logic, Twisted or Frantic and see for themselves.
EDUARDO
That I’ve heard many times that other styles were dead.
Where do you see yourself with regards to the world of music in 5 years time?
SHAF
To be 100% honest – I love hard dance, but I feel that I’ve achieved a lot of the original challenges I set myself 5 years ago. I’m looking to use my passion for all music to explore other genres and attempt to eventually produce a hybrid sound that will appeal to lovers of big, tough chunky, funky beats, with a tang of electro and breaks.

Playing and producing records somewhere.
You have both played and partied at Tasty. What does Tasty – House of fun conjure up to you?
SHAF
Tasty is always loads of fun whether I’m playing or clubbing there. It’s just pure carnage from start to finish with different styles of music that I don’t usually have a chance to listen to, such as hardcore. This one is set to be no exception and I look forward to seeing some wicked people that I only ever see at Tasty parties.
EDUARDO
Tasty is one of the best parties to dj at & party at, House of fun is going to be superb.
Who else on the Tasty – House of fun line up would you recommend people to hear?
SHAF
The whole line up is absolute quality, but Steve Blake b2b Spencer Freeland is bound to be a wicked set, both wicked djs, top blokes and must have the cheekiest smiles between them in hard dance. Blakey ALWAYS looks like he’s up to something.
EDUARDO
It’s going to be a massive line up! But I’d say don’t miss Kevin NRG, Mark EG and Billy Bunter.
Hardcore over the past 18 months has become huge again, and is massive all over the UK & world, do you like it and do you think it will take off in London in the same way as the rest of the country?
SHAF
I used to go to raves when they were called “all-nighters” to get a fix of happy hardcore. We were only 14 years old and we’d pick up the pirate radio stations such as Dream FM and Don FM and find out where the ticket outlets were, tell our parents we were staying at a mate's house, then go and dance our little socks of.
I’ve definitely noticed a massive revival and seen it infiltrate many rooms at hard dance clubs. The scenes obviously compliment each other and if it continues to get support from promotions like Tasty then I don’t see why it won’t be here to stay. Londoners are very open minded so if it works elsewhere, it’ll work here.
EDUARDO
I’m open minded to music in general and hardcore is no exception. I can’t see a reason why it shouldn’t take off in London as it’s in the clubbers subconscious and has important people supporting it.
What can we expect from you on the production tip in 2005?
SHAF
I’ve set myself a target of 6 finished tracks this year. Slightly ambitious, as I do have a hectic lifestyle already, but I’m sure gonna try. I’ve been working on something with MDA & Spherical and have plans to produce some filth with the Dirty Djs – can’t say too much on that now, but we will be providing more info when we finalise plans.

What has been your worse memory as a dj?
SHAF
My worst memories are usually when something goes wrong with the equipment. Either really bad monitors so you can’t cue your tracks or when the dj before you destroys the mixer so you can’t plug your headphones in… haha (Paul Reeves)
EDUARDO
As you have many good moments, you have many bad ones. Playing in a club called Ocidente in my hometown, one night the police came and made us stop the music and took away 1200 clubbers from the place saying there was a bomb there. We found out latter that it obviously wasn’t truth but a neighbour annoyed with the music made it up.

What’s the strangest request you have ever had whilst djing?
SHAF
Erm… I’d better not say the strangest but I have been asked if I’ve got any ska to drop in my set at the George 4 once... haha.
What has been your most enjoyable moment?
SHAF
I love it every time I play. As long as the promoters have done their jobs, the clubbers are happy and responsive then it reflects in my sets and I give it all I got.

There are too many to mention. The most recent was at Ministry of Sound, playing back to back with Moni for UP.
Where can people catch you DJing over the coming months?
SHAF
Due to coursework deadlines I was forced to turn down sets for the beginning of this year. I chose to only do a couple of gigs per month and then will be back in full action in time for the spring/summer…
