NastyDirtySexMusic: Review

Reported by Ben Green / Submitted 15-02-05 19:28

Bring your ‘panache’ by all means, but don’t let the self expression stop there. And never forget it’s the music that’s in charge here... reads part of the slogan emblazoning the back of the NastyDirtySexMusic t-shirts, and this sentiment certainly permeated the hallowed halls of Ministry of Sound on Saturday night. From a glimpse of Tim Sheridan (co-founder of the night with partner-in-crime Smokin’ Jo) behind the decks, his “jaunty hat at a jaunty angle”, ad-libbing some sublime moves, you know this is a night to leave the ego at the door and get dirty.

NastyDirtySexMusic was born in Ibiza last year following Tim and Jo parting company from their Manumission residencies. The party came about as an outlet for the pair to showcase/ have fun with an eclectic mix of what they termed “NastyDirtySexMusic”. The sound created quite a stir amongst visitors and residents of the White Isle and this led to a series of parties at Ministry of Sound at the end of last year. These acted both as a reunion for the Ibiza crowd and an introduction for London to the NDSM sound. Seeing the length of the queue on Saturday, it was clear that a fair proportion of the capital had been introduced, or perhaps seduced, by this sound. So here we are, Ministry of Sound, Saturday 12th February and the first NDSM party of 2005. Is it all still so seductive?

The music policy in the main room (The Box) is, well… nasty, dirty, sex music. There’s no other way to describe it. But I’ll have a go. We’re talking genre-hopping from sexy grooving house to pitched-up hip hop to nasty breaks, all with one thing in common – the Filth factor. Tim and Jo, by their own admission, have been around the dance music scene for a long time, and this allows them to raid their extensive collections for the nastiest, dirtiest, sexiest music they can find, whatever “genre” that might adhere to. The fact that they both traditionally play different takes on electronic music also allows them to bring different elements to the (turn)table too, to great effect. Tune-wise we were treated to everything from the ubiquitous “Drop the Pressure” and the Tiefschwarz mix of Spektrum’s “Kinda New” to the electro weirdness of Steve Bug’s take on “Creeps” by Freaks and Tiga’s “Pleasure from the Bass”. Personal favourite moments of the night for me were when the dark sexiness was turned into lights on, hands-in-the-air, ear-to-ear grin territory for the airing of Greenskeeper’s “Keep It Down” and Underworld’s “Two Months Off”. Oh, and that Stanton Warriors mix of Alter Ego’s “Rocker”… Cool

At this NDSM, as with the previous one I attended in October, I found it very hard to drag myself away from The Box, scared that I might miss a bassline so grimy that even Kim and Aggie would be disgusted. However, in the pursuit of journalistic balance, and more importantly a Corona, I ventured to the bar. On the bill in here for tonight were DJs big enough to attract a decent crowd in their own right – Seamus Haji, Mark Knight, Guy Williams and Nick Bridges, as well as a live percussionist, adding a more funky, latino flavour to proceedings. I’m never really sure about live percussion personally. I have seen it done fantastically, but I have also seen it take over the tunes a bit, and, for me, Saturday night was a little in the latter territory. That said, it was for a small proportion of the night, the bar was rocking and it’s always great to hear solid, feel-good, funky house in the bar at Ministry. With recent trends in house erring towards the darker, dirtier sound, it was inevitable that the bar took this direction slightly as the night went on. Whilst I love this sound, however, for me this area seems to work better as a refreshing tonic to the 100% proof liquor of the Box room.

The Baby Box was given over to Ministry Breaks for the night, with General Midi and DJ Hyper representing Kilowatt Recordings. I managed to catch some of General Midi’s set (some of you may be more familiar with his Starecase moniker) and was mightily impressed. I thought the breaks room worked better than having another house room, as they did with last October’s promotion, although it was understandably a little undermanned on the dancefloor at times.

So, is the night still a seductive success, or will this party best remain with the memories of vodka limons, beaches and bikinis? For me, it’s certainly the former. A very Ibizan vibe remains to this party, even when you swap the sun for the searing wind, and I think this owes a lot to the venue. Many people seem to have a misconception that Ministry of Sound is just not “underground” enough for them. It’s all about workout videos and attracting more tourists than the London Eye. Well, ok, it’s not a total misconception. But that’s a different side to the brand. The club itself, as well as having a cracking soundsystem, a glamorous party crowd and great staff, is currently putting on some of the freshest, and, ironically, most “underground” parties in the country. And NastyDirtySexMusic is one of the most important of them. Whilst you’re not going to see Tim or Jo mixing the 2005 Anthems cd, nor practising their aerobics on Top of the Pops, you just might be seeing Ministry adding another poster next to the sound level warnings as you enter The Box. Caution: Extreme Filth – The Music Is In Charge Here.

Thanks to Tim and Jo (and Happy Birthday Jo Smile ), as well as the other DJs and staff at Ministry.

Thanks to Tom for the photos.

The next NastyDirtySexMusic is at Ministry of Sound on 9th April Smile

Fantastic article! NDSM is a wiiked promotion,in the best venue in london and showcases amazingly cool tunage but i have to say (IMO) that the amount of fuck ups in the main room was a tad disappointing - I guess thats the price you pay to witness the incredible energy and enthusiasm of tim and Jo in the booth.......never the less twas a great nite.
Roll on the april addition!

I've not stopped telling people just how good this night was - the best night clubbing I've ever had by a mile, beefa included!! Definitely back for the next one, and definitely back to Ibiza to see these guys play on home turf. Not to be missed. Not worthy... And I can't believe I consciously chose to skip Seamus Haji, I just couldn't pull myself away from the main room!! God save the queen, the fascist regime!! Laughs out loud

Top night, and a good review by Ben. I think most people had trouble leaving the Box, it was just too much fun in there!

Was surprise by the lack of women, I just assumed that because it was a house night, there would be more, but certainly not put off - it was all about the music + fun

From: House Mouse on 19th Feb 2005 10:02.40
Excellent review, it really sums up the night to a tee.

Red5, I know what you mean, it was bloke heavy. As a woman I always find it disappointing that any night in London that plays anything other than the funky house fluff doesn't seem to attract the girls. Apart from the ones with taste of course (ahem!)
