Lashed International Room preview with Brazillian Badboy Eduardo Herrera

Reported by benz / Submitted 08-12-04 20:10

Brazil. Hard Dance. Perhaps these are two "concepts" that you might not initially relate to eachother...but the truth is there is an ever-strengthening link between the two. It seems that the Brazillians' love of techno is now expanding into harder horizons! One such Hard Dance loving Brazillian is the excellent, versatile DJ Eduardo Herrera, currently residing in London and bringing joy to clubbers week in and week out. His ability to excel at playing techno, house, hard house, and everything inbetween has seen him play at events such as Hard House Academy, Antiworld and Heat, as well as numerous smaller-scale promotions throughout the capital. He came over to London just over 2 years ago to embark on a music production course, and has since built a reputation for himself as a highly talented, quality DJ. In preparation for his appearence in the highly cosmopolitan Lashed International room at Lashed @ SeOne on December 18th, I caught up with Ed for a quick chat...

Bom dia Eduardo!

Bom Dia/Boa tarde/Boa noite! Smile

Where were you born and what formed your introduction to music?

I was born in the city of Porto Alegre in Southern Brazil in 1969. I’ve been into music since I was a baby, when my older sister always had the stereo on. I’d listen to everything from The Beatles to James Brown and Rita Lee (Brazil’s queen of pop-rock). In the late 70’s I was going to a disco called HAPPY DAYS. They had an afternoon session (for kids) and I had the chance to get to know the DJ and watch him at work. I had piano classes for 4 years when I was 14 years old, then for 1 year I sang in the Porto Alegre’s Symphonic Orchestra Choir (I’m obviously not a good singer or I would have carried on!).

In the mid 90s a friend called Nando Barth introduced me to the world of electronic music, and since then it’s been a nice tool to explore my musical horizons. In London I completed Point Blank’s music production course in 2002.

Do you feel that you have musicality in your blood? Are other people in your family involved in music?

Music is my medicine…can’t think of anything more important in my life My younger sister Ana Paula Herrera is involved in the production of a psy trance event in Porto Alegre called SKY WALKER. http://www.psykers.com/

How often do you go back to Brazil? What music is big in the clubs over there at the moment? Is hard dance doing well at all?

I go back home at least once a year and over there psy trance and techno are big on the scene. Hard Dance is growing and it has a REAL potential as many DJs are playing this music and loads of people there have been in London so they know and love Hard Dance, and we are in contact with most of them, including promoters - so the doors are definitely open.

I hear that the Techno scene in certain parts of South America is pretty big – what is about techno that makes it so popular all over the world?

Techno's post-industrial background certainly is a big attraction, as its futuristic mechanical concept is recognised in the video-game generation’s subconcious.

Wow! Describe your ideal set – how long would you play for, what equipment would you use, and what would you play?

I used to play 6hr sets in the late 80s early 90s…I’d love to play that long again, starting funky and getting harder with a techy flavour. A Pioneer DJM600 does the job with the usual vinyl and CD decks.

You are playing amongst a star-studded line-up in the Internationally Lashed room at Lashed’s massive 1st Anniversary Party at The SeOne Complex on December 18th – what are your feelings about this event?

Its the best to be lucky enough to be playing alongside all these gifted people playing in a such important event in a venue that’s absolutely gorgeous!

Do you think that there should be more parties with such an eclectic blend of music?

FREE YOUR MINDS, FREE YOUR SOULS!

Laughs out loud Can you single out one experience as your most enjoyable DJing set ever?

Last year @ “Yoji Time” is gonna always be in my heart.

What other countries have you played in? Have you ever played at any outdoor events or festivals?

I played in Argentina in a club called Ave Porco. I have never played at any outdoor festival

What’s your favourite part of London?

Alexandra Palace – the most beautiful view of London.

Have you tried your hand at production yet? If not, what style would you like to make a tune in first? Do you think it is easier to make a good tune in one genre than in others?

Yes I am improving my skills and I think a good tune comes with a good idea and the ability to make it work…in any style.

If you could only play one tune at Lashed – what would it be, and why?

Calango – my tune with Rafael Araujo and Ilan Kriger from the Brazilian label BR-909. Because it’s a nice mix of ideas and it has a part of me in there…

Many Thanks Eduardo!

More: After our sold-out Lashed events saw thousands of avid clubbers take by storm SeOne in London, Scotland, Russia, Finland, the infamous Hell’s Angels Bulldog Bash and six exclusive parties in Ibiza, we decided to hit, not only the capital, but the whole country with an armament of roof raising parties. The mythical club full of nostalgia, Heaven in London, will declare the festivities open on November 5th with five rooms of musical excellence, crossing over all different styles from hard dance to trance to house to electro and breaks so that no one is spared. The exuberance will then spread across the UK and Ireland with its second victim being The exuberance will then spread across the UK and Ireland - The Arches in Glasgow, Revolution in Ireland, Coach in Northern Ireland, Air in Birmingham, Evolution in Cardiff, SeOne in London
and The Works in Nottingham.
Our annual Christmas bash, that attracted more than 2,500 clubbers last year, The Anniversary, will be held at SeOne in London with an array of top international DJs that will break
all the rules of music policies.
Be reassured, this won’t be the end; Lashed will be celebrating with the release of a CD in January 2005 that will reflect the frantic vibe of the parties and the best dance music around. And if this wasn’t enough, you will be able to satisfy your need of Lisa Lashes’ furious brand of music with a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix on 5th December 1-3am, after three years of absence on the airwaves… it will rock!

Room One - Hard Dance – Lisa Lashes, BK, Tidy Boys, Lisa Pin-Up, NuEnergy Collective, Paul Glazby, A-Star, Andy Whitby, Ed Real.
The line-up of this room is the absolute reference to the quality of our parties. Once again, we have pushed the envelope to create the ultimate show! You can’t go wrong with these DJs who will make your heart beat at its maximum and blow your mind off with their hard, fast and dirty tracks. This is going to be bigger and better than any other party you have ever experienced.

Room Two - Lashed Breaks Session – Freq Nasty, The Freestylers DJs, Matt Canton, Lashes Breaks, Max Cooper - 3 decks, Steelo
This room will dedicate its sound to those dirty basslines, fat beats, pumping rhythms and frenetic scratching. Due to the success of our irreplaceable breaks sessions, we try to set our standards even higher after each party. This time, we have indisputably managed to reunite THE best artists and talent of the genre for you under the same roof. This is the biggest breaks line up of the autumn anywhere, anytime!

Room Three - Hard Dance - Internationally Lashed - Rob Tissera (Italy), Proteus (Finland), Karim (France), Tara Reynolds (Australia), Eduardo Herrera (Brazil), Jay Pidgeon (Ireland), Paul Henry (South Africa), Donna Birt (New Zealand)
How to go round the world in 10 hours without leaving one room or how to be hit by some of the finest sounds from outside the UK. This room will be dedicated to top international DJs that have made it big in their respective countries and that will literally explode our dancefloor. Be ready to give them a warm welcome!

Room Four - Balearic Lashed – Griff – Manumission, Savers, Bass Spankers, Filthy Rich.
Maximum dirty dancing is required with these funky vibes. Our DJs will give you a reminder of your summer holidays in Ibiza, and for those who have never been there, you’ll find out what all the hype is all about right here. Our DJs are regulars at the Devil’s Island and know exactly what tunes will set the room on fire.

Room Five - Lashed-techno – Dave Angel, Filterheadz (Live), BK (Techno set), Dave Randall, Paul Christian.
This room is solely dedicated to the genre that has had the most influence on dance music over the past decade. It has never gone out of fashion and actually keeps getting better. Its incessant quality means that it is still perceived as the edgiest sound of electronic music. Whether it’s a DJ set or live performance, our tremendous line-up will only confirm this.
