Never Enough Maria: Interview with the Queen of Hard Dance

In the time Brazilian Maria Rosangela Teixeira has been in London she’s thrown some legendary parties, worked with the capital's top promotions and built up a massive crowd with a huge guest list. Consisting of Brazilians, Rumanians, French, Italians, Antipodeans and others, it is certainly one of the most up for it international party crowds in London. HarderFaster somehow managed to kick her off the computer and keep her off the phone long enough to get the lowdown on this hardcore chick.
So who is Maria? Promoter, event organiser, dj manager, ticket seller and party girl extraordinaire, she has her fingers in so many pies it’s perhaps surprising she manages to spend so much time on the dancefloor! Yet is this really the same woman who arrived in the country nearly five years ago never having been to a club before?
This is essentially a love story — of how one woman's love for music has taken her from her first flyering job for Twisted to helping run some of London's top nights. But Maria does more than just help run parties: every week she makes sure that her hundreds, if not thousands, of friends and supporters not only go to the party they'll most enjoy for the cheapest possible price, but that they have the best time they can when they get there. Are you on Maria's list? After reading this, I suspect you may well want to be!
Brazil is one of the most vibrant countries in the world. What made you give that up for cold grey London town?
To change my life! To see how big the world is! To discover hard dance!
Were you a clubber in Brazil? How is the scene there different to the UK?
No, I never went clubbing in Brazil. I discovered everything here when I arrived about five years ago. In Brazil I lived in a small town, so I’d never been clubbing or to a rave. My first contact with electronic music was Escape from Samsara at the Fridge and I fell in love!
What attracted you to clubbing? To promoting club nights?
Well I fell in love with clubbing at Escape from Samsara, so I wanted to go every Friday but I had no money to buy a ticket, so I started to make contacts. I met a Brazilian guy named Eddie, the Angel, who was a dancer. He used to help Robyn make guest lists for Frantic, so I started helping him. He got me flyering for Twisted so I could get free tickets for Escape for Samsara. He left, but I stayed helping Robyn to make guest lists and then one day I asked if I could work for Frantic. I was still very ashamed of my English, so I was embarrassed to talk to Robyn and Will. Finally, I spent ages writing a text to Robyn saying I wanted to show her my skills and work with her at Frantic. She texted me back to say that I had to prove I was good enough to work at Frantic.
So you worked hard and showed her?
Every week I’d send names in exchange for free tickets for my friends. One day I was late with my list and they asked me for it. I asked them if they’d talk business and would they give me a pound per name, and they said no, you can have two!
What’s a typical day in the life of a club promoter? What the hell do you actually do? There must be more to it then handing out flyers and propping up djs’ egos!
I’m at my computer all day long chatting with promoters — Will (Frantic), Enrico (Antiworld) and Damian (Heat). There are many different promotions I work with, including Antiworld, Frantic, Heat, Lashed, Logic, Riot, Tasty, The Gallery and Wildchild. I was on my computer so much I got Repetitive Strain Injury! Plus I always lose my voice as people call me all day, any time, because they want to party! My voice got so bad I went to the pharmacy and got medicine for public speakers, actors and singers. I recommend it!
What are your favourite promotions?
Can I put them all in alphabetical order again?! It’s difficult for me to say what’s my favourite as I try to give them all a good service and also to create a good vibe for my crowd. I try to look after the clubbers and make sure the promoters do their best to throw a good party. If the service is good, everything works well, then it’s all good. Maybe I’m a perfectionist, but I’m always disappointed with something. Things are never 100% perfect. If the cloakroom is sh*t or the toilets are bad, it’s my job to improve it. I try to enjoy myself and support my crowd, fix my concentration on making a good party and keeping people happy. I’ll ask people, “Do you want your money back?” Most of the time, they say no!
Who are your favourite djs and producers?
Of course Eduardo [Herrera] is my baby! Watch this space for his new productions!
What’s your best memory of a night out?
Psychedelic Academy at Brixton Academy. It had the most amazing production and when Infected Mushroom played I was dancing with my crowd. A friend of mine was doing capoeira and to do that you have to make space. I opened some space and it was so f*cking wicked!
What do you like about clubbing?
My crowd!
What do you dislike?
Why do some people have to take too much to enjoy the music?
What’s your most important thing for a good night out?
My energy!
Brazil has some of the best coffee in the world. You must find the coffee here sh*t?
I prefer tea and two sugars please!
The music industry is still very male dominated. Do you think it’s different for women in the industry? Do you ever find it hard being a female promoter?
Well I’m not just a promoter, I always try and have fun with my friends and don’t forget I’m a Mum and older than a lot of clubbers. I like to look after people. With every promoter I work with, I’m learning how to be a good female promoter. We all learn from each other and give advice to make a good party together. Then it doesn’t matter if you’re a woman or a man. I’m Never Enough Maria!
If you weren’t a promoter, what would you be doing?
I’d be a housewife! A normal housewife! I’d stay home on Saturday nights, go to the cinema and shag my husband!
What are your hopes for the future?
Next year I want to go back to Brazil for a holiday. I’ve been waiting for ages to go to see my son. He’s 13, believe it or not! I miss him so much. I want to bring him here with his grandmother, to live near me so that I can see them all the time.
Do you have a vision for a perfect club night?
I’m still dreaming up a good one.
What forthcoming events are you most looking forward to?
Hard House Academy: it’s going to be very special for Brazilians. You can see the colours in the flyer are the Brazilian colours. It says on the flyer in Portuguese, ‘TE VEJO NA PISTA!’ I’ll see you on the dancefloor!
Paradise City@Alexandra Palace: the production is going to be incredible, and just look at the lineup!
Heat NYE with the Gallery: I was supposed to go back to Brazil after Antiworld but I changed my mind and my ticket, so that I could stay for Heat NYE and…
Frantic NYD@Koko’s: Eduardo is going to play the main room! I can’t miss that.
This HHA is going to be my third anniversary, as my first HHA was in October 2001. Can you remember your first HHA?
My first HHA was in 2000 and I’ve still got the ticket! I arrived in April 2000 so I’d only been here a few months and new nothing about the different music styles. I was blown away!
What would you say to clubbers who say if you’ve been to one HHA you’ve been to them all? Why should they go to this HHA?
I don’t need to say anything! People come to me wanting to go.
Too Much But Never Enough was one of my favourite parties. Will you ever do another? Please…
Maybe for now you have to keep the good memories! I’m busy with lots of other projects at the moment, including my website. I already have a website in New York and hope to launch www.mycrowd.net in London early next year.
Thanks for your time Maria and no doubt see you on the dancefloor very soon!
