Return to the Underground - Nick Spinola Strikes Back

Some of you may not remember what used to be known as "Big 4" - original four promotions that delivered hard beats to south side of the river. Club Alien, Escape From Samsara, Return To The Source and Otherworld rocked the dancefloors every weekend and repetitive beats generation discovered its brand new home - The Fridge in Brixton. While RTTScrowd preferred psy/tribal beats and Otherworld and EFS were leaning towards trance, Club Alien developed a particular love affair with techno. The perfect blend of sound based around releases on labels like Drum Code, Primate, Ongaku, Rotation, Push Records and Tortured Recordings inspired resident DJs and guests to create unique musical entity. One of the main driving forces of Club Alien’s adventurous sound was a resident DJ Nick Sekulic, A.K.A. Nick Spinola.
Nick originally comes from Belgrade, former Yugoslavia. He arrived to London at tender age of 19, in 1989, to study at University of London. While at university, he discovered new sound that was flooding London’s underground club scene. Very soon he swapped Criminal Law Manuals and essay questionnaires for a pair of Technics 1200’s and he traded-in classroom for a far more exciting basement fun. Daily stock of vinyl at Zoom Records in Camden, Tag Records in Soho and Fat Cat in West End were soon to become Nick’s new full-time obsession.
From squat parties all over London with Tribal Energy Sound System where he had his first residence to main room slots at Club UK and legendary Megatripolis at Heaven, riverboat parties on Thames and 10,000 people raves in fields of Surrey and Kent - Nick just about did it all. Been there, done it, "got the T-shirt to prove it"! DJ Magazine name-tagged him a "Yugoslavian maestro" while the Friday night crowd at The Fridge kept on "screaming for one more"
After Club Alien left their monthly spot at The Fridge, Nick continued with guest slots at Fabric and Complex in London, playing aside the likes of Luke Slater, Dave Angel, Jim Masters and Charlie Hall.
New fresh interest came along with growing electro-clash, although Nick still kept in touch with his first love, 4/4techno beat. Recently he launched and promoted Dust Bar and L.E.D. Bar in Shoreditch, played and managed DJ slots around Europe for himself as well as international stars like Jim Masters, Goldie and many others...
We managed to catch up briefly with Nick over the phone, and get some pre-party feedback from the man himself:
You met up with some friends in Brixton earlier this year who are also mates with Dave Logic, and few casual pints later you all came up with an idea for a classic techno set. Are you a believer in spontaneous actions, or do you rather follow bullet-proof plans? And how does that reflect your relationship with music?
I am definitely a whimsical type. I have always believed in jumping at the deep end and seeing where I end up. This meant that I have always developed interests in new musical forms and textures with relative ease, and was not adverse to experimenting and trying to fuse new with old, hard and soft, funky and linear.
People say that going back to your roots can help understanding yourself better, also things and other people around you. How do you feel about playing The Fridge again?
I am very excited. This is a place of which I have many good memories. However I do not see this as a spiritual journey of (re) discovery. My intention is to have loads of fun and to make sure that as many people around me have fun as well.
Have you got any good memories of the Fridge from Club Alien days?
Too many to mention... (laughs....)
How did you get into DJ-ing first? Why not drums or a guitar, for example?
My affair with music started before DJ-ing. I have played violin and saxophone in the past. I started DJ-ing because I saw it as a unique and innovative way of relating to people.
How do you describe your style? What can we expect musically from your set at Logic?
My style has evolved over the years. I am looking forward to playing at LOGIC since it is the only creditable underground night in London in my books at the moment. However, I will try to incorporate the new as well as pay respect to the old...
Have you got any special tracks planned for Logic crowd, or you’re keeping it as secret?
"Deal with the God" by Kate Bush for starters...

On Friday 22nd October 2004 Logic proudly present "Lords of the Underground", the next saga...This event's ultimate purpose is not to salute the DJs, Producers or Promoters of clubland - that has been done many many times before. It's purpose not to gratify ourselves in any way - there is no need for that.
