Twisted’s Sixth Birthday Preview: Interview with Dave Parkinson, PrimeMover

Reported by Annabel / Submitted 28-09-04 14:52

Clubs probably age in a similar way to dogs and cats in that every year represents about seven or eight of human years. If you multiply this by six you can work out that Twisted turns at least 42 years old on Saturday 02 October.

But as many promotions will have died off long before they reach middle age Twisted is going from strength to strength. 2004 has been an incredible year for this sassy promotion and it still has the refreshing exuberance of a naughty adolescent. Bringing PrimeMover's live sets has been one of the main factors to this added effervescence as Twisted fans have savoured every moment of their impressive regular performances.

2004 has also been a fun-filled year for Dave Parkinson, who is the master force behind PrimeMover. For those that don't know, he is the genius behind so many great hard dance tracks such as Black Dogs and also responsible for fantastic remixes of dance floor fillers such as ‘Come On’ by Breather.

We asked him a few questions and he told us why he certainly doesn’t hate 'Mondays'.

It’s been an exciting time for PrimeMover recently with some changes. Tell us about them?
It’s been a fantastic year. Getting signed to Most Wanted was the first, before we had this relationship I don’t think many clubbers had ever heard of us, but now we seem to be playing out every week and it’s great. It’s nice to get feedback from the crowd. When you’re stuck in a studio you never get that. Also PrimeMover now comprises of myself and a new partner Neil Chapman. We’ll also have guests such as the Happy Mondays guys from time to time.

Will we see any changes for this new partnership?
The sound of PrimeMover has changed a bit. Neil has brought new influences to the group. He’s a great musician and very good with chords and melody.

Do you have many interesting stories you can tell?
Loads! Don’t think you’ll be able to print them though!

You recently played with Factory Records, Hacienda legend Tony Wilson and the Happy Mondays at the Get Loaded gig at Clapham Common. Tell us about that?
That was probably the best experience of my life so far! Four months ago the Happy Mondays asked me to join the band. Obviously I said yes! Playing on Clapham Common to twelve thousand people was awesome.

Dave PrimeMover

How did you get involved with the Happy Mondays guys? Is it true you remixed their tracks?
I met the lead guitar player (Kav) through Danny Newman who runs Turnmills. I was working in the studio there and he just popped in and we started jamming together. We clicked instantly and the rest is history! We’re also working on new material which is sounding incredible. They’re great to work with.

Did you ever get to go to the Hacienda?
I’d love to say yes but I definitely did not.

What was back stage like? Go on there must be some gossip.
Nothing suitable for you to know! But I did get interviewed by MTV which was pretty cool.

You are playing for Twisted on 2nd October at their sixth birthday at The Fridge. Are you looking forward to it? Any special tracks lined up for it?
I can’t wait to play Twisted. It’s my favourite event, especially at the Fridge. I like the fact that there’s a nice big stage to perform on. The first track we’re doing is featuring Kav – the guitarist from the Happy Mondays and I’m also going to do some singing. Hopefully I’m in tune!

Do you have a favourite tune that you have produced over the years.
Its got to be Black Dogs.

What do you think the next big trend is going to be in dance music.
I think Drum and Bass is going to be huge again. I would like to hear more break beat in hard dance, it gives it more soul.

It’s got to be asked. What tunes do you have in the pipeline?
I’ve just done a track with the Knuckle Heads, it’s coming out on Tripoli Trax. I’ve also been in the studio with James Lawson and what we’ve done is sounding wicked!

People are saying that there aren’t that many good tunes out this year. What are your thoughts on this?
Music is constantly reinventing itself and I think hard dance is trying to find a new direction, so there’s been a lot more experimental tracks.

Let’s hope the genius of PrimeMover leads the way again, as it has before in the past!

Dave Parkinson is one of nicest guys you could meet, and a genius in the studio... he's produced tracks in just about every genre. The Cheshire Catz owe him a great debt for helping produce our first few tracks, and being generous enough to give us the knowledge we needed to produce our own. Can't wait to get back into the studio with him though because he just unleashes our creativity and is full of fantastic ideas. Take it easy Dave and see you soon. Hi Annabel Smile
