Interview with Paul Glazby

Reported by littlemissgenki / Submitted 20-09-04 16:45

The dark destroyer is back! With forthcoming gigs at HeatUK's Third Birthday bash this weekend at Brixton Academy and back to back with Ben Stevens in the main room at Chemistry on Saturday 9 October, hosting his own room 'Nightmare on Glazby Street’ at the next Tidy Weekender, and the third birthday of record label Vicious Circle to celebrate, it's going to be a busy month for one of the hardest men in hard house.

You’ve just got back from playing Tidy Magna Revolution – One Year On. How was it? Have things changed much in the last year?
Magna was really good, I’m not sure how its changed in the last year because I played the main room for the first time this time so had nothing to compare it to!

In general the scene has changed I think, due to big events like the Weekenders & Magna and then Hard House Academy every couple of months more people seem to wait for these and the regular clubs nights are struggling.

Friday night clubbing seems to have almost disappeared completely! Apart from Slinky in Bournemouth most other Friday clubs seem to be finding it difficult or have stopped running, which is weird, I always preferred to go out Friday night!

Were you a raver or a clubber before you got into djing?
Yes, that’s how I got into djing really; going back to after-parties and seeing everybody mixing made me want to do it!

We used to go to an amazing night in Sheffield on a Friday called Rise, then Gatecrasher sometimes on a Saturday, although I was never a big fan of GC, from that a friend of mine started organising coach trips to Sundissential in Birmingham, back when TDV and Sonique played there! Good times – I think!

You’ve been djing since 1998, i.e. for around six years. How do you feel your sound has progressed in that time?
I think the last 12–18 months I’ve started playing more techno in my sets, but that’s mainly due to there being a shortage of quality HH around! Things are looking up again though, labels like Short Circuit & Deprivation have been releasing some really good material lately and that has picked the scene up again and then there are new artists such as Masmada and obviously the return of Captain Tinrib is going to have a profound effect on the scene!

Is there any particular dj/producer that has influenced your style of djing/production?
When I first started playing I reckon 50% of my set would be Paul King (F1/Trauma) tunes with the rest being made up of BK, RR Fierce, Tinrib, Karim & Baby Doc’s stuff.
I suppose if you mash all those together, that’s where my influence is from!

It’s that time of the year when djs are drumming up support to get votes in the DJ Mag top 100 poll. As someone who’s made it into the top 100, what are your views on some of the blatant methods used? Who’s going to make it into your top 5 this year?
It’s all a load of bollocks really! If someone wants to vote for you they will and they’ll do it because you’ve managed to affect them in a positive way somehow in the last 12 months. If I (or any dj or agency) started sending out ‘Vote for me’ eflyers etc. people aren’t going to say ‘oh yeah we’ll vote for him’ just because I’ve asked them to!

Saying that it is nice when you do get in the top 100 and you haven’t had anyone pushing you, means you must be doing something right!

My top 5? Hmmm! Carl Cox, Andy Farley, Ben Stevens, Tim Clewz & Superfast Oz are the ones that never fail to amaze me!

If you had the chance to collaborate with anyone in the industry, who would it be?
Captain Tinrib or Dom Sweeten (Defective Audio/Base Graffiti/OD404) but hopefully I’ll be working with both of them in the next 6 months!

Last year I had the honour of presenting Vicious Circle with the Upfront Compilation of the Year award at the Hard Dance awards. Do you think the compilation is representative of the Vicious sound?
Yes I like to think so, anything we do we like to keep it in with what we’re about!

We started getting techno remixes done on some of the VC releases but that was after I started playing more techno in my sets, I try to always make sure we put tunes out that Ben (Stevens), Tim (Clewz) and myself would be happy to play.

The same goes for the albums I wouldn’t like there to be any tunes on them that I wouldn’t be playing in the clubs, that’s my form of quality control I guess!

Ben Stevens is one of Vicious Circle’s fastest rising stars. Who else do you have waiting in the wings?
Tim Clewz! He’s an amazing DJ, I’ve never heard such a competent warm up set as his, he can play hard but he’s got a real talent for building up the early part of a night, he played at a VC event a while back and we had Superfast Oz booked for second set, Oz got stuck in traffic so Tim had to play for nearly 3 hours instead of his planned 1 hour set, he just kept pulling out tune after tune but he never took it too far, that’s when I realised how good he was!

In the last few months you’ve played gigs from Cardiff to Canada, Sheffield to San Francisco. Where have you enjoyed playing the most? Where have you found the most up for it crowds?
The Tidy Weekender on the Sunday night is always 1 to remember, South Africa a couple of weeks back was awesome as usual, Slinky in Bournemouth is always a gig where you go home thinking ‘that was worth the drive’, San Francisco was a really good gig too actually, the crowd were well up for it and it was turning out to be a wicked night when all of a sudden the fuzz turned up and threatened to lock everyone up! Oh and I set a monitor speaker on fire!!!!

What is your most memorable gig ever? Why?
Most memorable gig would have to be Dance Valley this year, it was the first time I’d done it, and those Dutch certainly know how to throw a party! The production was out of this world! The memorable thing for me was playing to 20,000 people (so I’m told) in the middle of a gorgeous sunny day!

If you could plan the perfect party, where would it be? Who would play and what would be its format?
See above hahaha, I’m really not sure I could come up with anything to beat Dance Valley.

When are you at your most creative?
Just before I fall asleep, then I forget everything by the time I wake up!

Tonight I spent over an hour stuck on the motorway driving home from London due to an accident. What do you do to entertain yourself during those long hours on the road?
I’ve got a DVD player in the car! Job done!

Away from the hard dance scene, what would your favourite music be?
Metallica, Carl Cox mixes, Sting, Pantera, allsorts really!

What is your favourite track of all time?
Captain Tinrib & RR Fierce - Street Tab

‘Fuckin Hostile’ is one of the top hard dance tracks of 2003. How did it come about? Were you at the time?
I’d planned to use the ‘Fuckin Hostile’ vocal for ages and because everybody at the time was saying “hoovers are dead, hard music’s shit, hard trance is the way forward” I thought, “fuck this” and went into the studio to make something really fast, hard and with a big hoover in it! On the way to the studio I was listening to a live Pantera CD and between 2 of their tracks there was this big speech about how “Heavy music was supposed to be dead and gone…”
When we got to the breakdown I realised we needed something else to fill it out so I went to the car, got the CD, sampled it in and the rest is history as they say!

Most clubs use Technics decks. Have you used any other decks and what are your views on them?
I had to use Vestax at a club in Newcastle once, I wasn’t looking forward to it but once I’d got on it was fine!

I don’t think clubs should really have anything other than Technics though because that’s what everybody expects to be playing on!

Are you a vinyl junkie or are you embracing the digital age?
I’ve played CDs for years now but I always like to play vinyl, never 2 CDs at once, I’m not into all this downloading and file sharing but then as the owner of a record label I don’t suppose I would be.

Today I checked out some of the new toys at the PLASA exhibition in Earl’s Court. What piece of equipment would you like to see that’s not on the market yet?
The DJ booth toilet, for those 3 hour sets!

What software/equipment do you use to produce tracks?
Depends which studio I’m using! Maddox uses Cubase SX whereas BK, Sentience and Mik Cree use Logic.

The legendary Captain Tinrib has dedicated a track to you, 'The Great Gatsby’'. How did this track come about? What's it like working with the Captain? Is he going to be working with Vicious again in the future?
Basically we met in Japan while on tour together; he nicknamed me ‘The Great Gatsby’ due to my surname! We’ve kept in touch since and he’s started to make tracks again and we’ve licensed his first 3 productions which will come out consecutively on VC (36,37,38) with remixes from some of the top names in the scene – nice! Hopefully we’ll keep working together, we get on well and his input in VC can only be a good thing!

What tracks are you working on at the moment? How do you find time to write & produce when you're playing out so much?
To be honest I’ve been finding it difficult lately but I’m hoping to get in a lot more over the next few months, I’ve got a track called ‘Voices’ which is coming out on our Neonate label soon, also a track called ‘I Need To Know’ which Tidy have signed for release early next year.
I’ve also done remixes for Tidy (Annihilation), Recharge (Elements), Stimulant
(Ready To Rock) & Tripoli Trax (Hellfire).

You’re about to help HeatUK celebrate their third birthday at Brixton Academy on 25 September by headlining the foyer. I’ve seen you play some incredible sets for HeatUK in the past, especially at last year’s legendary ’24 hours in Amsterdam’ and more recently at ‘Heat Great Artists’ at La Scala in April. Is there any particular HeatUK party that sticks in your mind?
I loved Heat at the Turnmills, so all the times I played there I suppose, I can’t remember ever playing at Heat and not being impressed!

What can we expect on the 25th? Will you be partying as well as playing?
Unfortunately not, I’m playing Manchester first so will be rushing to get to Heat!

Next month you’re taking over Arena 2 at the next Tidy Weekender to host ‘Nightmare on Glazby Street’, but the line-up is top secret. Can you give us some clues about the surprises you have in store? Have you got your costume sorted yet?
Let’s just say I’m going to be pretty tired by the end of it!

Regards the costume, I was going to get dressed up as Freddy Kruger but the glove gets in the way a bit!

There are many up and coming djs and producers on this website. What advice would you give them?
I know it’s a bit unoriginal but don’t give up, if you really believe you’ve got talent then you’ve got to stick at it, hound promoters with CDs, try to get studio time to make a track because that’s a big thing these days, try to be original.
