Antiworld vs Teknoworld vs Psygate @ The Stratford Rex Reviewed

Reported by Steve Milton / Submitted 14-09-04 21:26

Well then, where to start? There’s probably very little I can say here which hasn’t been said already in the forums and making sense of it all is probably well beyond the capabilities of that lump of grey matter I have sloshing around in my cranium. But as always I’ll give it go, so without further ado I present you the Antiworld at the Stratford Rex review.

Having never been to the Rex I was fairly curious as to what to expect. The outside of the venue gave no real clues as what lay in-store so after some jovial banter with the security (always nice to hear) it was time for a minor voyage of discovery as we checked everything out. Staircases and corridors abound leading to various small rooms all with a different theme, that’ll be the Teknoworld, Hard Dance and Psygate rooms then. Admittedly there were directions posted on the walls and thank god for these, as I’d have been lost good and proper. The main room was certainly a pretty big space and the amount of people who likened it to the old Camden Palace were probably pretty close with their analogy’s. Yes it was a bit tired looking and probably not totally suitable for an event like this, however, the effort put in by the promotions team was clearly obvious to see. But let’s face facts here and ask yourself a simple question. What is the one main thing you go to an event like this for? Socialising? The Atmosphere? The décor and lighting? No . . . it’s the music. Sure all the other things are important factors but in real terms they’re just icing on the cake.

When I saw the line-up for the main room it was one of the reasons I chose to drag my sorry butt out of the house for the longish trip from sleepy Bedfordshire to the less than desirable Stratford area of London. I know there are plenty of times we can get to see LAB4, K90, Nu Idol and the Nu Energy Collective play but how often do you get them altogether on the same bill? It’s a first for me that I can tell you. With the usual cast of supporting DJ’s plus the promise of an Andy Farley and Chris Liberator B2B to round things off it did have the makings of a really good night. So what went wrong then? As far as I’m concerned very little. Yes there was the odd technical issue, which made the continuity of the proceedings, fall down a tad and yes the numbers were down but having said that by far and away most of the people I talked to seemed to be having a good time. I’m very much of the opinion that you have to make the most of what’s going down at the time and quite often it’s only on reflection that the failings of the promotion come to light, however mindless bitching without the full facts to hand is not only unnecessary but also damaging and counter productive. I know that to lots of you out there the price of a ticket from your hard earned wages gives you a right to criticise but come on people lets keep it constructive and see what the promoters have to say in response, which (and credit where it’s due here) they have done and hopefully put to rest any further fears you may have.

Anyway, I’m rambling again so back to the issue at hand. The music. K90 played in his typically energetic style a selection of chunky yet elegant hard trance tunes from his soon to be released album and of course the ever popular old favourites “Breath” and “Red Snapper”. What set would be complete with them? Nu Idol moved things up a notch with a more underground (sorry, I hate using that term but I can’t think of a better description at this time) sound and one of my personal favourites “Life is a Poison”. Now this guy really is a showman with his totally way out costumes and headgear. And to prove he doesn’t just play, get paid and vanish, low and behold there he was in the thick of things stomping away with the rest of us while the Nu Energy Collective treated us to some gloriously crafted high BPM sounds that were not for the faint hearted. I have to say their remix of “Adagio for Strings” scored a 9.8 on the great stuff-o-meter and I was having a ball. A quick heads up here to go the half of the Collective that I spent an amusing time with back stage dishing out some good natured banter even it if did go over some people’s head Wink . An awkward silence when LAB4 were supposed to start had the technical people scurrying for torches and checking connections and it looked as though everything had gone Pete Tong. The crowd became a tad restless so a CD was thrown on until the issue was dealt with. After what seemed like ages but was probably less than 10 minutes they were ready to go, the problem it transpired was the levels not being turned up on the main audio desk. The boys gave a good account of themselves again with the usual mayhem including a track that brings me out in goose bumps every time I hear it . . . “The NRG”. Come on guys, lets have a vinyl pressing, you know you want to.

By now the proceedings were running a bit behind schedule, which left only 45 minutes for the Chris Liberator and Andy Farley back to back. The rumour mill had been working overtime as word got round that Chris was not going to show due to the imminent arrival of a Liberator junior and Andy was nowhere to be seen. Nothing could have been further from the truth. As the DJ booth was situated away from the main stage it seems everyone missed the coming together of these to exceptional DJ’s and along with the shortened set time the musical journey was less than what most people had hoped for. I for one have to hold my hands up and admit that I didn’t take much notice of what was going on as at that particular point in time I was engaged elsewhere.

Apart from my earlier excursions the other rooms remained largely unvisited so I’m unqualified to comment on the proceedings there so I’ll leave it alone. One thing that really did impress me were the lasers. Absolutely top stuff. A really impressive light show that had me transfixed while I jumped around and attempted to take the odd photo. Real thought had been put into their location and effects which goes to show that the production values behind the Antiworld party ethos really are there regardless of whether the night in itself was a success or not. That can only be decided by the individual so make up your own mind but I’ll certainly not worry about going to another party organised by the Antiworld crew.

Antiworld have just announced their next party. More details as we get them!

I fine review mate and totally spot on, I've read some of the negative points that people have made in the forum and have to agree with you that the night is what you make it! I had a good time with good music and good people (even you oh short one :-p ) what more can you ask for? Keep up the good impartial work mate.
