Interview with James Lawson

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 01-09-04 19:24

After two years as Twisted resident, James Lawson is preparing for an exclusive artist showcase at The Fridge on Saturday September 4. Ahead of the big night, Dizzy Lizzie asks the production legend – croutons or bacon bits?

1. What time is it?
20:06

2. Name?
James Lawson

James Lawson

3. Any nicknames?
Jimmy Jam the hard dance man

4. Do you have any pets?
Not yet, but we are inheriting two cats early next year

5. What exactly will you be showcasing at Twisted?
Lately I have been working really hard on new material and have loads of new tracks to play. Unless you have heard BK DJ in the last two weeks you won’t have heard any of these tracks, as I am saving them for my showcase night. The reason BK has them is that he is putting some of them on the forthcoming Extreme Euphoria album. Bonus!

So what can you expect? I don’t want to give too much away, but I guess I can say that you’ll be hearing something a little bit different alongside what you might expect me to play. I’ll be showcasing a slight change in my musical direction (as a DJ and a producer) which will hopefully be taking things forward and making things a little more interesting. Don’t worry, I haven’t suddenly changed into a techno DJ or a Drum Bass DJ, but I am branching out and taking my sound with me and I’ve got lots of enjoyment out of investigating new avenues. It is also a bit of a chance to revisit some of my production over the past 3 and a half years, so I’ll be playing some of my favourite tunes from that time. On that note, listen out for The Edison Factors 2004 remix of Hallucination…

It isn’t just about me though. I have tons of exciting new material from loads of people that I will be playing. There are some killer tracks out there if you go looking for them!

6. Do you engineer all your own tracks?
I always have done. The only exception is when I have worked with Nick Sentience and BK - as I was working in their studio they did the administration.

7. Sweets, crisps, or something healthy?
All of it, piled high on a big plate with the option of seconds!

8. Does the new material include any collaborations?
Yes. I have been working with Andy Farley, Ed Real, Matt Williams, Nick Sentience, Phil Reynolds, Prime Mover and Steve Hill.

9. What’s your favourite drink?
Sol Beer

10. Have you engineered for anyone interesting lately?
I haven’t done any engineering work for a long time as I’ve been busy with my own material, but I do have a couple of jobs coming up.

11. Got any tattoos or body piercings?
I have a pierced ear, but haven’t had anything in it for about 7 years now, so it’s probably healed up now.

12. Are you especially excited about any of the new stuff?
Absolutely! But it is impossible for me to pick a favourite – that’s what the dance floor will decide.

13. Who’s the most fun in the studio?
J Lo naked with a bottle of baby oil!

14. Have you ever stolen any traffic signs?
I hate to admit it, but yes. While at Uni we went and nicked some flashing lights from a road to light up the basement at a party we put on, but unfortunately it’s not a great example of my criminal past. We put them back again a couple of days later. Awww bless!

15. Croutons or bacon bits?
Bacon Bits

16. The Twisted artist showcase is a big night for you, what are you going to wear?
I haven’t got a clue, so at the moment it’s my birthday suit. Licks LipsWink

The Fridge

17. How are you training for the event? Jogging? Pasta?
Watching the Olympics on TV.

18. What’s your favourite colour?
Gold – come on Great Britain!

19. Loads of London DJs play abroad, but few make it outside of the M25, what’s it like out there?
Fun (because it’s different to the norm), a drag sometimes (because it takes longer to get there and go home), but ultimately it’s great because it is a new crowd every time which spices things up a bit!

20. What’s your favourite day of the week?
Saturday

21. Boxers or briefs?
Boxers

22. What time is it now?
20:28

Please answer the questions and send this back to the person who sent it to you. If you send it back within ten minutes, you will have good luck for a year. Do not send it back and your fingers will fall off. This is TRUE, you might not believe me, but it happened to a good friend of mine!!!!! Good luck!!!!
