Interview with Eryk Orpheus Reported by spacekitten / Submitted 23-06-04 20:08 Although you may not (yet) know the name, Eryk Orpheus has a long association with the music industry both within and outside of the dance scene. He’s worked alongside Radiohead, Stereolab, Judge Dread, John Otway and Hawkwind as well as Andy Farley, BK, Captain Tinrib, Lab 4, K90 and Chris Liberator. Until recently Eryk was the song writing and production force of renowned live PA Orpheus 2, playing the top nights in London and around the UK including Atomic Energy, Sundissential, Antiworld, ROAR, Fevah, Tribal City, Sunny Side Up and Peach goes Hard to name but a few. He has now chosen to go solo as a performer and has started his own company, Intelli-Trance to concentrate on producing and re-mixing… I spoke to Eryk to find out more about Intelli-Trance, collaborations with Group 185 and Nu Energy and forthcoming releases…. You describe your music as “powerful uplifting intelli-trance”. What exactly is intelli-trance? Intelli-Trance was originally just a play on words, a few people had described my music as ‘intelligent’ because of the uplifting melodies and smoothness of the production. I was sat about chatting one evening and a guy that had heard a few tracks said ‘your music has a sort of intelligence’ to which I replied ‘ you mean Intelli-trance (chuckle)’ and the reply was simply ‘ well, yeah’ so the Intelli-Trance brand was born. I wish I could elaborate more but that’s really how it happened. Your musical career started with your involvement in a band and includes supporting and working as a sound engineer for outfits as diverse as Radiohead, Stereolab, Judge Dread, John Otway, the Lightning Seeds and Hawkwind. Since immersing yourself in the dance scene five years ago you’ve worked alongside artists such as Andy Farley, BK, Captain Tinrib, Lab4, K90 and Chris Liberator. With such a diverse background who do you consider to be your main influences? It’s hard to say really, I’ve been fortunate enough to have experienced so many different musical styles through working as an engineer. I try not to be influenced by anyone when I’m writing and I rarely listen to hard dance unless I’m having a mix or listening to a demo I’ve been sent. I suppose it was bands like Orbital and Leftfield that really got me hooked on electronic music, and Leftism would definitely be one of my desert island discs. What do you listen to to relax? I love chilling out to a bit of Groove Armada, Kruder and Dorfmeister and, of course, Leftfield. You’re earning massive respect in the industry as a producer, re-mixer, DJ and live PA. How do you juggle them all and does being involved in the industry at so many levels make for a more rounded ‘experience’? It’s bloody difficult sometimes, and certain aspects have to be put to one side every now and then to let another area develop further. At the moment I’m concentrating on the production side of things and am limiting the live PA this year to a few carefully chosen nights, one of which is Bedlam at the Fridge at their promotion called Back to the Future. I’ve got the first one of those on the 6th August, I’m really excited about that as I’ve heard excellent things about Bedlam and their promotions. Atomic Energy have also just given me a residency which I’m over the moon about and there are a lot of other promotions that are keen for me to play for them although I’m just not going to have enough time to play for them all this year. I think it’s good being involved in the industry at different levels and I’ve learnt a hell of a lot over the past 4 to 5 years, the key is to not spread yourself too thin, people sometimes take on too much and end up becoming unreliable because they don’t get round to doing what they said they would which always leaves someone feeling disappointed. You recently performed your first solo PA to a full house at ‘Group 185 Present’ at Cyberdog; were you pleased with your set? I can honestly say that it was the first time I’d gigged and was 100% happy with the set, there was a lot of new tunes in there which is always a huge risk for a live PA but the crowd seemed to be enjoying them so I was loving it. Are you finding it more challenging being a solo performer than being part of a two person PA? Not at all, I was responsible for the production on all the Orpheus 2 stuff and I wrote the majority of the music so the workload hasn’t increased in terms of song writing. Going solo has also opened up many other doors and has given me chance to work with some excellent talent so I wouldn’t say it’s more challenging I’d say it’s more gratifying. What do you enjoy about the live environment as opposed to DJing and do you find there are differences in how audiences relate to the two? Playing live definitely has the edge: when it’s a good show and you’re taking the crowd on a journey it’s the best feeling in the world; the adrenalin also pumps because there’s always a little voice in the back of your head going ‘please don’t break down’ to the kit that’s being subjected to harsh clubbing conditions (heat, sweat and sometimes blood and tears). It’s difficult to say how audiences relate to the two, I think most people know when you’re doing a PA but there’s still the odd few who come up to you after a show and say ‘ how are you doing that without decks?’ Where would you most like to be offered a guest spot - either as a live PA or a DJ set? That’s a tough one. There are a lot of really good promotions about at the minute so it’s really hard to say. I’m fascinated by the culture out in Japan so I’d love to play anywhere out there. Closer to home it would have to be at the Brixton Academy again or definitely at somewhere like the Glade festival or Glastonbury. Your production credentials include remixing the Group 185/Fordy track “Cained” and the Group 185/Type 1 DJs tune “Party Dirty”: Tell us a bit about your involvement. I’ve been doing quite a bit of work with the 185 boys and Cained was the first track of theirs that I engineered and remixed. Fordy was playing it out loads in Australia when he was out there and it was getting a brilliant response from the crowds. I don’t think the guys are planning on releasing it although a little bird tells me that they’re re-working it for their live set. Party Dirtier is set for release in Holland on DJ Fausto’s label and we’re just waiting to hear back from him on the release date. Fausto is doing the remix on that so it’ll be interesting to hear his twist on it. You’re planning a live album release this summer, is that correct? Yeah I should be releasing my live set later this summer which will be the first album release on my own Intelli-Trance label. There are a few preliminary promotional copies floating about in Cyberdog or people can order it from my website by dropping me a line. Once the release date has been set it will be available all over the U.K. and Europe, so keep your eyes on the Intelli-Trance website for further news. You’ve been in the studio with K-Complex working on one of your own tracks which is destined for released on one of the Nu Energy labels and also have plans to work with Mark Ashley from Nu Energy. Anything you can tell us about these collaborations? I’ve been working with K-Complex on Atom-E, a tune I wrote especially for Atomic Energy. It’s been great working with him, he’s an exceptionally talented producer and I’m over the moon with what we’ve done with it, he’s also been down to my studio to work on a brand new collaboration so keep your eyes peeled for that in the not too distant future. K-Complex and Mark are also coming down to the studio to work on the remix and I can’t wait, it’ll be freeform madness! What else is in the pipeline for this year? At the moment I’m in preparation for the first Intelli-Trance release, which will be Group 185’s tune Dr. Strange, I heard it for the first time at the party at Cyberdog and it blew me, and the rest of the crowd, away. The B-side will be an Intelli-Trance mix of the same tune and there will be a few promo copies of the single available at the next Atomic Energy party, Itai Doshin. The actual release should be available in mid August. I’ve also had a chat with Kevin Energy and we’re hoping to hook up to work on a couple of hard trance mixes of Atom-E for Kev’s Dynamix label so I’m really excited about that as well. Group 185 DJ JD has also been down to my studio and we’re putting the finishing touches to a tune called ‘Long Range Weapon’ and there’ll be a little teaser of that on the Intelli-Trance website in the next couple of weeks. With involvement in both the technical and creative side of the industry do you have a preference for one over the other or do you find that they balance each other out? I just love being involved in music, whether it’s writing my own material or engineering and producing for someone else. I often find that the more into the technology you go the easier it is to be creative so ideas are always coming thick and fast. You lecture in music technology for the University of Kent at Canterbury College. What musical philosophy do you like to instil in your students? I’ve been lecturing part time for about three years now, the teaching’s fantastic but the paperwork is a pain. The main philosophy I instil into my students is to ‘listen’ to as much different music as they can so they can learn from what they hear, enjoying it is also another vital aspect because if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing it makes it a thousand times more difficult to understand. Do you see a lot of creativity and innovation out there that gives you hope for the future of the scene? I believe that the scene does need a bit of a spring-clean; there’s a wealth of talent out there that just needs a chance to break through. I hear some amazing demos from people that just need a bit of direction and tweaking. I’m hoping that Intelli-Trance will be able to give those people a chance to bring their talent to a wider audience. You’re playing in the live room at the next Atomic Energy party, Itai Doshin, on 3 July: are you looking forward to playing for Atomic Energy again, and in a more central location? I love playing for Atomic Energy, it’s definitely one of the most exciting promotions around at the minute. The music and artists are always fantastic and I don’t know how Dean’s done it but the crowd are the friendliest and most up for it people I’ve ever met. I’m so excited about Itai Doshin at the Mass and with the added involvement of Group 185, The Nu Energy Collective, Freeformation and Dirty DJs the party is going to go off big time. I’d advise anyone going to take a spare pair of pants coz if they’re not sweaty from dancing then they’ll be wet with excitement … or both. Who else are you looking forward to seeing and hearing on the night? This is the dilemma, there’s so many fantastic acts playing I’m gonna have a nightmare deciding who to see. I think it’ll be a case of trying to catch a little bit of everyone but I’m really looking forward to seeing Proteus and CLSM as I’ve not seen their shows yet and have heard very good things about them.
