HeatUK ‘Summer Essentials’ Preview: Interview with Alphazone
Reported by Damian Gellé

Submitted 19-05-04 22:52
Alphazone are the German production duo responsible for such trance monsters as DJ Kim remix ‘Jetlag’, ‘Get Ready To Explode’, ‘Stay’, ‘Revolution (rmx)’, to name but a few. This Friday night they bring their high energy sound to Pacha for one exclusive performance at HeatUK’s: Summer Essentials (May 21). HeatUK promoter Damian Gellé spoke to Arne Reichelt, one half of the production team about their future moves.
Alexander Zwarg and Arne Reichelt
Damian Gellé: Alphazone is the combined talents of Arne Reichelt and Alex Zwarg - firstly tell us how you both came together and what was the first project you ever worked on?
Arne Reichelt: We met in 1995 at school. At this time Alex had done a fun track with samples from one of our teachers. We worked on this track a little bit further and it became a secret hymn among the students (laugh).
DG: How long do you guys spend in the studio each week and what came first - DJing or production?
AR: Production came first, but we also started djing back in 1996! At the moment there is much work to do, so we spend most of the week in the studio, as long as we are not dJing somewhere!
DG: You’re known for using a very ‘dense’ production sound, mixing progressive elements along with slamming hard drums, racing rhythms and tremendous breakdowns - how did that signature Alphazone sound come about? What DJ / producers have inspired you both thus far?
AR: There are some other producers which have inspired us, Dumonde for example. But our sound has developed through the time by itself. We always had a clear vision of how our definition of trance should sound: highly energetic, faster paced, with euphoric breaks and harder beats. This is what we try to do with each production and remix we are working on...
The Alphazone Studio
DG: What do you look for in a track before agreeing to remix it?
AR: That's quite simple: A big catchy hook which could be transformed into the "Alphazone sound"!
DG: The first time I ever heard the artist name ‘Alphazone’ was when I first heard your 2001 remix of DJ Kim’s ‘Jetlag’ explode over the sound system was at our first event at Camden Palace - it blew me away. Was this a defining moment in your careers thus far?
AR: Yes, definitely. DJ Kim's "Jetlag" was the start of our hi-nrg trance productions under the Alphazone alias. We just did underground club techno before...
DG: What Alphazone future remix projects can we look forward to in the future?
AR: There are huge projects to hit the surface in the near future. For example there will be an Alphazone remix for the new Dumonde, which will be released in early Autumn 2004. The original track is a real bomb and we will give our best to produce a genre-definining remix for that. We have also started our own UK label "Skywarp Records", which has several big tracks in the pipeline. The next release is "Escade - Shuffle Royal", which will be released June, the 17th. Check our label website for more information: www.skywarp-records.de
DG: You’ve done work with Tony Burt from Above The Sky records and Mat Silver who resides over there - all I ever hear about Germany is techno, so how is the trance scene over there?
AR: The scene is very very small. There are just some clubs in Germany which play trance, most of the clubs over here do different styles. Mostly house, techno and black music. Nearly 90% of our records are sold outside Germany.
DG: You have just setup your own label Skywarp - why start your own record label when you can release on others and what are the advantages of being producers and having your own record label?
AR: We have total control over the tracks which are signed, so we can define our own label sound; the things that our label stand for... With our new label we want to give melodic hardtrance a better platform so that it gets more recognised in europe. We want to become the number #1 label for euphoric hands-in-the-air hardtrance !
The Pacha Main room
DG: Your tracks have received massive support from DJs like Paul Van Dyk & Ferry Corsten - was there a time when Alphazone struggled to get their records played out? What advise can you give budding producers trying to get their tracks played by superstar DJs?
AR: We were lucky that Alphazone got massive support right from the start ("Jetlag"), but one tip for all coming producer talents out there: Don't hesitate to send your latest productions to the big name DJs. When a track is really worth playing they will do it. For sure!
DG: Which one of you DJs the most and where can we see Alphazone DJ in 2004?
AR: Most of the time we spin together as DJ-team! For 2004 there are several big gigs planned in countries like Australia, UK, Sweden, South Africa, Brasilia and the Netherlands.
DG: The Hard Dance scene in the UK has recently seen an influx of live dance music performances with new acts like Prime Mover, Nu-Energy Collective, Nick Sentience Live PA, emerging with established acts like K90 and Lab 4. Do you guys have any plans to perform live? If so tell us a bit about them.
AR: Yes, there are plans for an Alphazone LIVE PA for summer / autumn 2004. Watch out for that!
DG: I’ve wanted to get you guys over to play for ages and it’s finally happened. You’ll love the sound system in Pacha. What new bits can the Heat crowd expect from you on the CDJ 1000s?
AR: We will try to provide the latest and best in hi-nrg trance. Big euphoric tracks and a couple of previously unreleased tracks which have NEVER been played out before!!!
DG: What time have I got to pick you up from the airport?
AR: 16.15 hours. Don’t be late.
DG: Thanks for the interview!
You can see Alphazone play at HeatUK ‘Summer Essentials’ @ Pacha, Terminus Place, outside Victoria Station.
