Riot!'s 3rd Birthday Party, Easter Sunday (11th April 2004) Review

Reported by Olly Perris / Submitted 13-04-04 16:26

So Riot! is now finally 3 years old. In 3 years, Ed Real has taken "his baby" to the top of the London clubbing tree, being twice given the accolade of Club of the Month in Mixmag magazine. The 3rd Birthday party promised to be a fantastic event although perhaps the unsuspecting Riot! faithful were not quite ready for what they were about to experience when they finally got through the doors at The End...

Once through the doors, it was obvious that the effort had been made to make The End look like party central. Balloons littered each dancefloor and were tied all around the DJ boothes, as well as photos on all of the walls featuring pictures from the last 3 years. There were also loads of satirical Riot! adverts based on posters from films, the most notable being a poster for what is surely to be a future blockbuster, "Riot! Actually" Big grin. Jokes aside, the place had been tarted up well and it set the mood perfectly for the birthday party atmosphere. To kick off, Tom Real funked us up in Bar Riot! although most headed straight for the main room to catch Jon Rundell playing probably one of the best sets he's ever done. The music policy was, to quote dance music geniuses 2 Unlimited, techno techno techno techno! It was great to hear techno anthems such as Renato Cohen's "Pontape" and Tomaz vs Filterheadz "Sunshine" alongside more underground tracks such as Cave's massive "Street Carnival", which prompted possibly the finest Jon Rundell balloon bongo performance ever witnessed! Jon set the pace well by finishing on some older Tripoli records including the huge "Let Me Tell You Something" by OD404, a tune which set the tone perfectly for the next DJ, Dom Sweeten.

As shown in the interview on Harderfaster before Riot!, Dom hadn't played in a good few years and was visibily nervous, taking his time to study the mixer and watch the crowd reactions from Jon Rundell's set. However as soon as his first record, the huge "Music" from Lawson & Freeland hit the decks, the nerves seemed to magically disappear and all that was left was one hell of an experienced DJ doing what he does best - bang out tunes like no other. Moving swiftly through pretty much every OD404 production from recent times, Dom quickly settled right into the mood and absolutely banged the crowd senseless. People were still coming through the doors when the gargantuan anthem "Panic Button" sent clubbers into fever-pitch on the ever-increasing dance floor mass. Dom had the room jam packed and was putting everyone into an absolute frenzy. Dom's mixing was at times, a bit ropey but the tune selection is more important and the tunes were absolutely phenominal. As soon as Dom moved into newer OD404 productions such as the new remix of Tinrib's "Street Tab" and the huge remix of "The Tradesman", the crowd were like putty in his hands, all completely subdued and at the hands of a production master. I think the message from the crowd reaction was pretty clear, Dom has returned to the scene big time and is now hungry for more, and as a Riot! regular, I would part with my hard earned cash to see him again at the drop of a hat.

Coming on slightly late but banging it out from the word go next was "The Legend" Andy Farley. I simply don't know how this man chooses his tunes but every single tune was visibily sending shivers through the spine of the Riot! dancefloor. Mixing up current favourites such as Mrs Wood's "Joanna (Ian M Remix)" with older classics such as the massive "Access" and Guy McCaffer's "Raw 9", the widely-voted best DJ in hard house was doing what he does best, creating a frenzy and generally causing devestation on the floor. Mixing seamlessly too, he is without doubt the envy of every DJ out there and the jewel in the eye of every clubber he plays to. A fantastic set once again, this man never ever disappoints.

But then perhaps, we get to the defining moment of the night and perhaps one of the best Riot! moments of all time. And what a time to pull it off, with the dancefloor literally salivating and clubbers throwing their arms in the air in a human sea of endorphin-fuelled ecstacy. It should become a big question for future generations, "Where were you during Ed Real b2b Danny Gilligan's 3rd birthday classics set?". Put simply, this was one of the finest hard dance DJing performances of all time. Starting off with heavy tunes such as Paul Glazby's "Hostile" and the Stimulant DJ's "Hoovertime", Danny and Ed, oddly dressed in mice hats, literally sent clubbers screaming. I don't think I've ever witnessed a set where every single tune is greeted with a massive cheer and people grinning from ear to ear, but it's fair to say that with tunes such as Incision's "Beyond Motions" (which was so good we got it twice) Tony De Vits "The Dawn" and BK & Madame Friction's "Erection", this is perhaps the only viable outcome. Although you could say "anyone could play old tunes", the quick mixing and raw energy behind the decks really outshone anything I have ever seen before. Recent DJ legends such as Steve Hill's legendary Hoover dancing, Lab 4's insanity and Proteus' mohawk will almost certainly now be joined by the raw energy created by this set. It's difficult to find the words to describe the euphoria felt when the huge riff from Jonah's "Sssh Listen" kicked in, but it was the perfect moment for the perfect tune, in the perfect atmosphere. An absolutely incredible performance and one which I doubt Ed or Danny will eclipse for a long time to come.

To finish, "The Godfather" BK came on to give clubbers the final push over the edge into hard dance insanity. He had a tough act to follow and in my eyes, perhaps was a bit off the beat and wasn't as good as he could have been but from following Ed and Danny's effort, no-one could really do a fantastic job. Still, BK banged it out, leaving the euphoric clubbers a version of Prodigy's "No Good 4 Me" as something to finally remember the night by.

Put simply, the finest Riot! of all time and this is a view shared by many who have been going to the club for a long time. It's going to take one hell of a beating next month but after this, who knows where Riot! will draw the line. If you missed this night, you definately missed out and next time make sure you get down there so you don't miss something like this again!!
