The number 1 female and hard dance DJ in the world, Lisa Lashes, soon launches her own inimitable brand of clubbing mayhem onto London as Lashed kicks off at S.E.One on Sunday 2nd May. With more than 40 DJs and 3 live PA's it promises to be an absolutely huge event so what better time to get in touch with Lisa herself and ask her what it's all going to be about.
Lisa you are now billed as the No.1 Hard Dance DJ on the planet. Looking back to 5 years ago things were a lot different with female DJs like you & Anne only just starting to make waves. You obviously had dreams that you would want to go as far as you could but did you ever imagine it would take you to the most sort after Hard Dance DJ in the world?
When I first started DJing, I did it because of my friends and because I loved the music and the energy. I never really thought that it would go as far as it has, but I’ve always strived to do my best, and luckily, everyone has been incredibly supportive of what I do. The accolades are great, but I wouldn’t have received any of them without the fans and all of the people who love the music as much as I do.
Following its huge success in Ibiza last year Lashed has now gone global with parties in Beijing, Sydney, New York, Miami & Prague! What do you think is the international appeal behind its success?
The opportunity to do parties all around the world has been amazing. I think the appeal is that, in the places where I’m playing, I’m providing a sound and overall experience that is unique within those territories. We have a really good, strong brand, and the Lashed imagery, visuals, and production all add up to something very special. We also work heavily with local promoters to make sure that the parties go as successfully as possible.
How were the Lashed parties conceived?
We always talked about doing my own parties, providing a little bit of glamour and a little more allure to the harder sound. The idea was put to the test last year in Ibiza, and fortunately, has expanded into a fantastic global event.
The event carries your name but how hands are you with the organisation of the events?
I’m in full knowledge of the planning that goes into the events, advising on DJ line-ups, musical styles, and everything else along the way. It’s important that I be involved in order to ensure that the events are what I want and what the clubbers want.
Yourself, Eddie Halliwell & Andy Farley are 3 of the biggest names in the scene at present. There has been much made of the Mixmag Future Heroes as the new blood in Hard Dance. From what you have heard of them who do you think would be the ones to watch?
I always think that it’s exciting when new talent is so heavily helped by the media—it’s certainly played an integral role in advancing my career. I’d say that a few of the ones to watch are Tom Neville, Amber D, Guffy, A-Star, and Caroline Banks, but there are so many talented, up-and-coming DJs out there.
Are you are the stage yet when you walk down the road shopping people recognise you & come and want autographs etc or are you still hassle free?
It’s a bit of both, depending on where I am. I find it somewhat embarrassing to be recognised, but I never have a problem giving out autographs or being approached by fans.
Both you and Anne Savage are headlining the event, Anne being one of the original Lashed Residents from Ibiza. A while ago there was talk of a joint label between you, ‘Savagely Lashed’, was the label shelved or is it still a concept you are working on?
Like many good projects, things are sometimes put on hold until the right moment comes along. Currently, other projects, such as Lashed, are filling up our lives, career, and work—but you never know what’s in store!
Your image is very unique to you and has become almost a signature look. Do you have any specific shops you shop in or do you have to look around for the perfect Lashes outfit?
I love the new Harvey Nichols in Birmingham and enjoy visiting the shops in London around Bond Street. I’ve always liked going out to find unusual outfits—Philip Treacy does really amazing hats. You know us girls; we just adore our shopping!
In terms of production A-Star was recently asked about whether or not there was a ‘Lashes/A-Star’ collaboration in the pipeline. Would this be something you would look at doing?
This may definitely be something that we’ll think about doing in the future, but it’s not a collaboration that will happen straight away. It needs to happen naturally. We are two separate DJs, and at the end of the day, although it may seem an obvious partnership, it’s important for us to take things in our own direction and in our own way.
If & when you decided to write a autobiography of your life what would it be called?
Well, as a matter of fact, since the beginning of the year, I’ve actually been writing a diary that documents all the travelling that I’ve been doing recently. I’m collecting bits and bobs, lots of footage from around the world and will eventually create a sort of scrapbook of the year—so you never know, it might just end up as an autobiography!
You recently switched management companies from Tidy Trax to Nettwerk. Does this mean that you will be releasing solo tracks on other labels as well or will you remain with Tidy for your production releases?
There’s no hard and fast rule. I always love working with Tidy and am looking forward to going back in the studio with them very shortly. Currently, though, I’ve been working with BK and have some really new, hot stuff that will be coming out sometime in May.
In line with this would you ever consider doing a solo artist album?
Both solo projects and collaborations are all a big priority for me this year, and a solo album is something that I would like to do in the future. Finding the right people to work with is extremely important, however, so fitting all the pieces together may take a little time.
Lashed also sees you turn your hand to the breaks sound. How long have you been into breaks and what is the appeal for you?
I’ve always loved playing breaks, but it’s been more of a thing I do when I get back from clubs and everyone’s at the house—we usually end up playing until early the next day! There is just something about the heavy bass sound from DJs like FreQ Nasty and Plump DJs that I love. The breaks sound is having a big influence on my current studio work, and I see it playing an important role in the future studio projects that I’d like to do.
You’ve played at venues literally across the world. Do you feel that UK venues are equal to venues in countries where the Hard Dance scene is emerging at present?
I’m in the fantastic position of being able to play at all of these amazing places around the world. But it’s hard to compare them, as every venue is unique in its own way. I can say, however, that I love playing in the UK—there’s just no place like home sweet home.
