Heat & Logic present “Forces of Nature” @ Heaven

Anybody who has been to an event by either Heat or Logic will probably recognise just how much respect both of these two promotions have gained over the past couple of years. They have both thrown landmark, sell out events, they both consistently book the best DJs and live acts and they both have an extremely professional approach to what they do, so when you have two of London’s favourite clubs putting on a joint event at one of London’s most famous venues it really can be described as a match made in Heaven!!
After spending what seemed like an eternity sitting on the tube, I finally arrived at Charing Cross Station and proceeded to make my way to Heaven, a venue I hadn’t been to since I last went to Gatecrasher – which was a long time ago. Word must have spread that this was to be one of the biggest parties this year to date, as the queue was already quite long and still growing. Once inside, I proceeded straight to the main room to order a drink and find a nice spot on the raised balcony to absorb the already present atmosphere. Dave Lochrie was playing the opening set - consisting mainly of classic hard trance, dropping in a couple of well known crowd pleasers i.e. K90’s “Red Snapper” and “Final Frontier” by The Disco Brothers. Up in the Star Bar Paul Henry was kicking off with his usual blend of energetic hard house and NRG. As the late hours of Friday proceeded the music stepped up a gear in the main room as Logic and Atomic Energy resident Rubec took to the decks to let rip with an energized hard trance set.
Meanwhile up in the Star Bar, newly appointed Tripoli Trax boss Marc Johnson had taken over from Paul Henry to unleash some quality hard house with strong bass lines and subtle 303s onto a colourful assortment of clubbers, whilst in the Dakota Bar things were just kicking off as one of London’s favourite new trance DJs, Daegal Brain opened with the first set at 11.30pm. It was at about this time that I decided to take a wander and try to find the V.I.P bar. I succeeded in finding it, only to find that nothing was happening as yet and after a few strange glances from a few of the funky lot I decided to stick to what I know and love and went back into the main room. Rubec had really got the place fired up by now and the ever present crowd congregated below seemed to be loving it. Following on from Rubec was the one and only Kevin Energy, another firm favourite with the Logic crowd. He played what can only be described as a truly exceptional set – teasing and playing with the crowd with his usual style of cutting, scratching and beat juggling. Towards the end of his set the staff cut the lines to all of the balloons hanging from the ceiling and all you could hear for a good five minutes was the sound of balloons bursting, but it was all in the name of good fun and the clubbers seemed to love it. In all of my complete and utter awe I completely forgot that Justin Bourne was now on in the Star Bar and only managed to catch the last ten minutes or so of his set, which was a shame because I do really rate him as one of the scenes better hard house DJ’s and producers. Anyhow it was time for the man I would describe as most probably the most energetic DJ I have ever seen – Proteus. Now after seeing him at Logic a couple of times I have to say I do keep an eye out for his name on flyers. He never seems to fail to give a good performance, really giving his crowd something to see with his mad dress sense, mad dancing and near on technical perfection. At one point I witnessed the bar staff trying to stop the monitor speaker from falling off of the bar as Proteus jumped up onto the counter and proceeded to stomp about manically. In my opinion this guy is most definitely one to watch. Karim turned up to take over but I didn’t see any sign of Superfast Oz and after waiting around for a short while I headed off.
I reappeared in the main room in time to catch the last ten minutes of headlining live act Lab 4 and all I can say is that both tension and tempos were pretty high. The guys were onstage doing their usual show of bouncing about like nutters and banging their heads at double the speed of the kick drum… The crowd were going absolutely insane and it appeared that this was what a lot of them had been waiting for. I’m sure most of you will have probably seen them in the past but they never fail to help pull in a crowd and tonight was no exception. After Lab 4 finished it was time for one of the capitals most experienced DJs and regular Heat player Spencer Freeland to show the dance floor how it’s really done. Ever since I used to go and watch him play at Frantic, Spencer Freeland has been a firm favourite of mine as well as one of London’s most respected and sought after DJs. He played a hard trance set typical of his style to a pretty receptive crowd. In the Dakota Bar Pendragon and EfS favourite Beamish was busy taking on Oberon as the music turned from the pure trance of Ian Betts and Daegal Brain into my preferred style of full on tech and psy trance. I would have to say I reckon this room has the best sound system in the venue – the sounds filtered through crystal clear and you could really hear the tight punchy bass lines and kick drums.
Finally it was time for the last set in every room, as Marc French took over from Spencer and K90 and Andy Farley took over in their respective bars. I didn’t actually get to see either of K90 or Andy Farley’s sets as I was too engrossed in the driving, energetic and full on hard trance that Heat’s exclusive resident Marc French was hammering out. In amongst his set he dropped a couple of tracks that I really rate at the moment, them being; “Come With Me” by Mark Richardson, “Never Surrender” by Jupe and of course the absolutely brilliant Nick Sentience mix of NRGs “Never Lost His Hardcore”. I’d have to say it was a great final set to round off an absolutely fantastic and memorable event. Hopefully we will see a few more collaborations like this in the future.
