Interview with A-Star

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 27-02-04 15:05

Mixmag Future Hero A-Star rapidly rose to prominence in 2003 as one of the DJs to watch in the UK hard dance scene. Now getting his teeth into the production side of things, he's been in the studio with Casper, Ingo and Matt Williams. He makes a rare London appearance for Hardware on Sunday the 29th February - read on for an update on how things are going with him.

HarderFaster: After making your name nationally know as a DJ, you are now creating a name for yourself as a producer with club anthems like 'Just say No', and collaborations with Casper on the 2003 classic 'Afraid of Us'. Which route do you see yourself concentrating more on in the future - production or DJing?

A-Star: I would hope to develop both! I am in the Studio a lot at the moment which is great and really want to push that side of things this year. Over the next few months I have quite a few pieces to be released including 'Insane' and 'My Definition' on Vacuum Records and a tasty new piece with Matt Williams. Obviousley DJing is something that develops all the time and I want to do bigger and better things!

HF: Will there be any collaborations in the future (or are you working on any now) with your girlfriends the lovely lisa Lashes?

A*: Collaborations are definatley on the cards, 'New Dimension' is my latest collaboration and others are to follow with Ingo so lookout for that! Not sure if collabroating with your girlfriend is a good idea, she might fallout with me over a kick drum and lock me in the studio!

HF: You played to thousands of people at Glastonbury and escape into the Park last year - which do you reckon has the best atmosphere and crowd reaction? Clubs or festivals?

A*: Both are great, but festivals would have the edge. Nothing better than seeing a sea of people bobbing up and down in a giant tent.

HF: You're DJ career has been mainly situated in the North at Sundissential, GoodGreef and Storm. However after a recent gig at Frantic's Convergence do you feel that clubbers up north or down South receive the harder end of hard dance better?

A*: If anything from what I've heard and seen they like it harder down south. But having said that they like it hard up north too. So as long as your playing decent music, they like it whether your in Truro (which I was recently) or Newcastle!

HF: You have played alongside some of hard Dance's top DJs like Paul Glazby and Andy Farley, who has been the most inspiration to you / given you the best advice out of all the DJs you have ever met and why?

A*: All the big boys (and girls) are inspirational in their own way thats why their at the top. I would say that Eddie Halliwell is my inspiration at the moment because he is young and talented and shows you what you can do if you put your mind to it, good lad! I would say that the best advise would come either from my girlfriend (coz she's always a good one to ask about things sometimes!) or Rob Tissera - who is a wealth of knowledge and a top bloke.

HF: As a Mixmag Future Hero you have already been tipped for the top, and both the magazine and radio 1 have been singing your praises. What opportunities do you feel that this kind of suppot has given you?

A*: Mixmags support has been fantastic over the last year and I thank them very much. It has given me the opportunity to play places I haven't before including different countrys.

HF: We hear you're off to China in a few weeks, what are you most looking forward to doing / seeing there?

A*: Can't wait! From what people have told me it's a real eye opener. I look forward to expeiencing the different culture and cuisine (as long as it's not a chickens head) and seeing if there into some proper hardhouse!

HF: Tell us a bit about your latest musical collaboration with Matt Williams...

A*: Finished yesterday, it's called 'My Dimension'. It's the bees knees. Driving bass and in your face - lookout!

HF: Your DJ career has gone from strength to strength over the past few years, with residencies at Scream and Lashed in Ibiza under your belt - where would be your dream residency and why?

A*: Those two residencies are ace, playing to packed clubs everytime. A dream residency would definatley have to be somewhere like Frantic, amazing clubs, people, atmopheres and somewhere you could develop your music style week in week out.

HF: Have you ever thought about breaking into into different types of dance music? Some London DJs play both Funky house and Hard house at Frantic nights...

A*: I love playing different style at home but at the moment I an concentrating on letting people know what I am about out. However when I play warm up sets their always a lot more tech influenced.

HF: With your exclusive b2b set with Casper this Sunday at Hardware what can the clubbers expect?

A*: Should be interesting for sure. I've heard Casper is hard as nails (as is his production). We had fun making 'Afraid of us' together, hopefully we can get the same vibe DJing b2b. Expect some filth - leave your mums at home.

A-Star plays at Hardware on Sunday 29th February. For full details of this event click here
