Interview with Caroline Banx

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 21-01-04 22:12

To say that the past 18 months have been a mad year for a young lady from Ipswich would be a slight understatement! Having brought her first set of decks with her student loan and learning to mix just 18 months ago her achievement is even more astounding. So let’s see then: 18 months ago, bed room DJ who didn’t know how to mix. 18 months later: Sundissential Resident, regular guest at Frantic, Mixmag Future Hero, hosting own room at Ministry of Sound, Signed to the Nukleuz DJ agency and mixed the latest edition of ‘Hard House Anthems 5’ with Lisa Pin-Up! Quiet year then! We caught up with her before her set at Chemistry on the 7th February, and before she had a chance to run for president:

Looking back to 18 months ago, did you ever imagine that in a matter of months you would be made Sundissential Resident, play Main Room at Frantic, be signed to the world renowned Nukleuz DJ agency and then mix 'Hard House Anthems 5'?

Caroline Banx: No way, I could only ever have dreamed it, to think that 18 months ago I had only just bought my first set of decks and didn't have a clue about mixing, its crazy. I thought it'd be years and years before I’d be playing out anywhere let alone nights like Sundissential and Frantic.

As we understand it being signed to Nukleuz and being invited to mix 'Hard House Anthems 5' with Lisa Pin-Up all happened in the same day. You must have been blown away?

CB: Yeah for sure, the last few months have been a whirlwind ride for me, it's incredible, and I’m so lucky to be in this position and still am pretty blown away by it all! When I think of all the places I’ve played out recently it really hits me, it’s pretty scary!

In the last few months you've played several times in London. Do you think the London crowd needs to be handled in a different way from say a Leeds crowd?

CB: Both crowds are ace to play for although I do have a bit of a soft spot for London, the clubbers there are so laid back and I love that! Playing main room at Camden Palace is always awesome, it's the daddy of clubs and everyone is always up for a good time there. Obviously I love Leeds too, its jus going off in a different way there but to me “it’s all music and it's all about going out and having a good time."

Although you're based in Leeds at the moment you did spend much of your clubber life in the London Underground scene. It must be very surreal to be playing at the clubs that you used to frequent as a clubber in London?

CB: Definitely, I played at Ministry of Sound a few weeks ago and it really brought it home to me, I used to go there loads, it was one of the first big clubs I ever went to and one I used to always dream about before I was old enough to go clubbing so to actually play there was pretty special.

You're currently studying a production course in Leeds. Can we expect any Hard Dance productions in the near future?

CB: Yeah, I’m doing an HND in music production, I've nearly finished my first track which I’m working on with Ingo.....its evil! (grins) a cross between a bit of Psy trance, techno and filthy driving hard house.

Your passion for music extents beyond Hard Dance and you also have a passion for Intelligent Drum & Bass from the likes of LTJ Bukem. Do you have any other musical passions?

CB: I've been buying loads of breaks recently, tracks on Fat, Plank, Marine
Parade, I love Ils, Plump dj's, Stanton Warriors, Meat Katie and Lee Coombs. It’s a real contrast to the kind of hard house I play as allot of its dead chilled and deep in comparison. I love techno too, anything from Richie Hawtin and Sven Vath to Marco Bailey and Renato Cohen and House music.....it's awesome so long as its Dirty house music, none of this fluffy commercial stuff! Tania Vulcano, she's wicked! I really love the twisted sound of Psychedellic trance too, especially Erez Aizen and Amit Duvdevani (Infected Mushroom)Oh and I’m a real fan of Delta Goodrem, such a talent, she's quality! (winks)

You've now mixed your first compilation 'Hard House Anthems 5' which is due for release in the near future. Your style is a lot harder than previous artists mixing the Hard House Anthems series. Did you have to tailor your style for the mix or were you given a free reign?

CB: Well....the title X-rated totally complements my usual style so luckily I was completely allowed to let loose on the cd. The track selection was all my own choice and it's all pretty filthy stuff at that.

Caroline at the Minstry of Sound

Your better known for your Glazby-esque style of mixing and track selection. Has this always been your preferred sound or has it developed over time?

CB: It’s definitely developed over time, I started off listening to alot of happy hardcore, united dance was my thing for years and then I used to listen to Judge Jules on radio 1 religiously and I turned into a real trance head. I still like it; it's nice to chill too! I remember hearing 'Kick it' and 'Yamamba' for the first time and discovering Karim and Glazby style house, I was hooked to the harder stuff after that!

Who have been your strongest influences in Hard Dance and why?

CB: RR Fierce is one of my biggest influences and definitely one of the greatest producers in my eyes; he was such an innovative and talented artist and will always be a legend. Bust Da Beat, Street Tab, Italian Job, Narcan and Panik to name just a few says it all!
Mixing wise, I've been influenced massively by Paul Glazby and Andy Farley I love their style, solid smooth and seamless is what it's all about! Eddie Halliwell is technically an amazing DJ, he puts so much into his sets, I hope that one day I’ll I’d be able to scratch like him although not necessarily over hard house.

Back to Back with Ben Stevens at the Camden Palace

You recently played back 2 back at Timeless with your good friend Ben Stevens from Vicious Circle. Ben is another young talent who is tipped for the top and being backed by the likes of Vicious Circle, Frantic & Tidy. Who else would you advise us to keep an eye on in 2004?

CB: Yeah Ben is an incredible DJ, lovely bloke too and he will undoubtedly go far, I’d also watch out for Dom Sweeten (Defective audio) Ali Wilson, Ingo, Alex Carver and Chris Impact who are all fantastic producers, I also really rate Guffy and Tim Clewz as DJ's and think they will be big this year!

2004 is here with a bang. What are you most looking forward to this year?

CB: Being signed to Nukleuz is really exiting in itself; I can't wait to see what happens over the next few months. I’m especially looking forward to playing internationally, as well as establishing myself in the UK.

What was your most memorable event from 2003?

CB: When it was announced after my fourth set at Sundissential North that I was the new resident, it was such a massive surprise as I had no idea they were going to do that. Also playing at Creamfields in the mixmag future heroes tent, that was pretty cool like!

Although you are relatively new to the industry would you have any advice for other up and coming Djs?

CB: Live the lifestyle, get out there and talk to people in the industry and have the confidence to do what you believe in.

The last year months have been pretty mad for you. Where do you see yourself in 12 months time?

CB: In an ideal situation I’d be touring the world, playing in a different country every month doing all kinds of events from jungle psy trance raves to massive superclubs in Japan, Australia and all over with loads of production on the shelves too. Realistically though in 12 months? well....12 months ago I would never have even thought I’d be where I am now so ya never know but I would hope to have begun to establish myself as a respected DJ, have a few tracks out and I would also like to experiment with different styles of music and learn how to scratch.

Caroline Banx plays at Chemistry on Saturday 7th February
