Interview with Ilogik

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 05-01-04 20:48

As label manager of Elasticman and Ilogical Breaks and the man behind dance floor anthems 'I Just Can't Stop', 'Make It Happen' and 'Check this Out', former hardcore DJ Ilogik is one of the scenes brightest production and DJing talents. We caught up with him in advance of his upcoming set at Timeless this weekend... read on for more.

On stage at Camden Palace

Your label Elasticman has built a reputation as an outlet for upfront cutting edge releases. How did the label and its name come about?

I needed an outlet to build my name for dj'ing purposes so i started doing tracks, the first one i did was "make it happen". I sent it to Tidy at the time and they wanted it but took ages and it just wend on and on so i started elasticman to get the track out there. The name came from the logo. I sat in with my art guy and we made the logo and i took that away and thought of the name.

Your recent mix compilation for SUNDISSENTIAL was hailed as one of the best compilations in 2004 by many people. How much artistic control did you have over the track listing and did you pull the scratching off in one take?

I had quite a bit of control over it to be honest or i would not have done it but i was told to put a track on there which i really didnt want to put on there, people who hear me play out will not find it hard to guess which track that is, ha ha! The scratching was not hard at all and was done in one take more or less. The mix was hard as i had a rough track listing but i was half way through the mix and i was waiting for an andy farley track to be downloaded and i had not heard it so i was passed it and had never heard it and had to fit it in to the mix when i was already half way through it. Also the mix was edited to the max in order to fit 19 tracks on which meant alot of my mixing was edited as my mixes are so lond.

You’re becoming more and more known for your incorporating scratching into your sets. Is this a recent addition to you sound arsenal?

Not really, i have always done it but most of the time the systems that i am booked to play on are not ideal and i decide not to do it as the crowd would not get the best out of me. Also most of the mixers out there in the clubs have not got good scratching components so i dont bother. From now on though you will see more sets like this as it will soon be contracted when the booking takes place.

How long did it take you to perfect the scratch patterns and were you nervous when you first tried in live in a club?

Ive been scratching like that for about 10 years now so i guess that is how long it has taken although i rarely practise at home anymore which is a shame but i dont have time anymore. I cannot remember the first few times i scratched in clubs, i dont think i was that nervous, im normally really confindend behind the decks and am not scared to try tricks.

We don’t see you playing out in London as much as we’d like. Do you have ambitions to play more in the capital?

Yeh i suppose but i sort of prefer that as i dont want to over expose my self. I have got more bookings down there in 2004 though but i dont want to over do it, i want people to come out and see me when im booked in london and this wont happen if im there all the time.

You’re playing at Frantic’s Timeless this weekend. Any particular old favourites you’re going to be pulling out from the box?

Ummm, to be honest i have not got a clue, ive only just come round from the new years stuff and have not had time to think about it.

2003 has seen some serious changes in clubland with some established clubs struggling and others calling it a day. Do you think 2004 will see hard Dance pick up again and if so why?

I think we will see the truely talented dj's shine and the clubs that move with the scene and constantly change will shine. I is alot more hardwork to succeed both for dj's,clubs and labels now.

You’ve played at most of the top events and clubs in the UK and abroad. Are there any that you still aspire to play for and why?

There is no one really that i have not played for fortunatly except and cream events but time working on it and now that i am joining Network management and my profile rises im sure things like this will come as Network is a highly sought after agency/managment company in which Lisa lashes has also moved to.

Paul Glazby takes over from Ilogik at Riot

Tell us a bit about your Hardcore days as ‘Elogik’? Was it a natural process to get into Hard House DJing and production?

My name was actually E-Logic and yes is was an easy transition into hardhouse as it was very similar in many ways.

Hardcore appears to be making a resurgence at the moment. Are you seeing this and have you any desire to go back to your old sound?

I still keep in touch with many of the hardcore dj's and know that it is making a bit of a come back but i am far too busy with the hardhouse to be able to do anything alse.

What’s in store for the future?

I am currently doing an artist album which is going to be done with a difference and im also going to be doing another compilation at some point. Also look out for colaborations with Lisa lashes , Rot Tissera and Andy Farley to name a few in 2004.

Ilogik appears next in London at Timeless at Turnmills on Saturday 10th January. For full details of this event Click here

That's the last time I mock DJs making compilations. Obvioulsy not always done on computer while they're down the pub, then! I stand corrected. Looking forward to seeing Ilogik for the first time at Timeless on Saturday.
