We’re on a road to Knowwhere….. Review of Knowwhere Xmas party

Reported by Lizzie Curious / Submitted 24-12-03 11:50

Friday night…in da big smoke. Christmas is around the corner and I’m going to kick my festive partying off in style with a night out at Knowwhere, home of quality uplifting trance. I have heard only good things about this event and was looking forward to seeing if it lived up to its reputation. And yessir, indeed it did.

So, after a quick bite to eat, and a brief sojourn to go and see a mate DJing in a sausage restaurant (I kid you not) me, my better/long-suffering/other half Ali and our mate Nick “I’m only staying till 2” (yeah right Nick) arrived at The Soundshaft. The Soundshaft has always been one of my favourite venues; it’s clean and intimate and the split levels give added depth, with a balcony overlooking the dancefloor so you can soak up the atmosphere wherever you are in the club. And there are plenty of little corners with comfy seats to chill and talk spaghetti to other clubbers in too. The dancefloor boasts a warm booming soundsystem, which IMHO, is well suited for trance music. The DJ booth overlooks the dancefloor and gives us mere mortals a great view of the DJ at work. UV décor surrounds the dancefloor and Knowwhere add a huge screen on one side of the dancefloor with some nice involving computer visuals complementing the music…almost as ‘involving’ as promoter Stevie’s shirts… heh heh.

As we arrived, Jamesy was playing a corking set which was just right for the time of night - whetting our trance appetites nicely without going overboard. I was pleased to see the dancefloor already busy, with a mixed crowd of different nationalities and ages, all with smiles firmly plastered on faces. Chatting to people in the club most seemed to be regulars and all very friendly - assuring me I was in for a good night. In fact I met some really quality people there who I do hope to keep in touch with (if they were not secretly a little perturbed by my ramblings Wink

Anthony Dean, Knowwhere resident, took over from Jamesy and raised the crowd’s euphoria-levels several notches with plenty of hands in the air moments. This guy is full of energy and packs one hellova punch behind the decks and I really enjoyed his set …especially when he dropped one of my favourite tunes from this year: Ferry Corsten’s Rock Your Body. By the end of his set the crowd were fully strapped in, yelling and cheering and loosing themselves in the music: the atmosphere was really electric.

Dex then took the music up a pace with his slightly harder-edged trance set and really interacted with the crowd. He also dropped several all-time classics in amongst the harder tracks, such as Verracoche and The Gamesmaster. For me, these tunes have always had a real ‘sparkle factor’ to them and it was great to hear them again. Judging by the Cheshire Cat grins on those around me – these tunes definitely went down a treat. I was having a royal time jumping about on the podiums and stomping away…time was flying and so was I.

Ian Betts played the closing set of the night and what a way to finish – he played a blinding set and as a Knowwhere resident surely does them proud. With his obvious enjoyment of his music he totally draws the crowd in: interacting with everyone and also acknowledging individuals with a cheeky grin. The music was really euphoric and featured some of his own productions: tracks such as the sublime Love Resurrection getting everyone’s hands reaching out into trance hyperspace…pure elation and I loved every minute of it. And when he dropped Destination, the club erupted in a frenzy of smiles!

But all too quickly 6am rolled around and it was time to go. 2am Nick had loved it so much he had stayed till the very end! It got me thinking how all too often, come 5am clubs start to empty out and you are left on the dancefloor with too many people that are just flailing around: appearing to have lost their sense of rhythm along with the plot. The last hour can sometimes seem more like hard work than having it. Not so at Knowwhere: most of the crowd stayed right till the last minute and the atmosphere remained just as buzzing right till the end - which is a great sign of just how much fun it was! I also liked the fact that promoter Pablo got up at the end and gave out shouts of thanks to various members of the Knowwhere crew, who were met with huge cheers of applause!

All in all, a really top quality night, uplifting trance really is the sort of music to dance your cares away too and leave you with a smile on your face the next day. The DJs were on top form and you couldn’t have asked for a friendlier crowd. Top marks to the promoters of Knowwhere for putting on such an excellent party!

Thanks to Stevie for use of his pix.
