Riot, 27th July 2003 @ The End, London

OK so I'll happily admit it now. Before this event, I was a complete London clubbing virgin and had never been able to get the chance to come to London previously. So when I heard about Riot and the opportunity to come, I snapped it straight up. And oh-my-god, am I so glad I did. This had to be without doubt one of the best events I have ever been to in my life, and I'm sitting here now the day after, still trying to find words to try to describe it!!!
The first thing which hits you at a night like this is the sound system, and boy is this one good! I'm not sure whether it's recently been re-done, but it absolutely kicked serious arse. The bass on the speakers was enough to rattle your rib cage like a baby's toy, and the volume levels just impregnated your mind and the whole experience was absolutely mind blowing. For those unfortunate to have not been before, Riot has 2 levels; Upstairs is where the bar is and also the funky house is played. I managed to catch some of the Trophy Twins' awesome set, and the floor became as packed as a sardine tin when they dropped in tunes like Junior Jack "E-Samba" and the new Tim Deluxe tune "Less Talk More Action".
Downstairs however is where the hard stuff is played and where the sound system really rips through you. Warming up was DJ GRH who played an absolutely fantastic set. It's always difficult to judge a warm-up at a night like this because of the caliber and style of the DJ's to follow, but GRH pulled a blinder. Moving seamlessly from funkier material such as Richard F's "Cookie Dough Dynamo" into the hard blazing house of Overload "Duel" and the anthemic BK & Dave Randall "Tiptronic" to conclude. GRH also interracted with the crowd wonderfully and really helped to hype the floor up, despite the fact that it was only half filled at this stage. Certainly no easy task!!
The End - Hard, Fast & Furious
Following on from GRH was EJ Doubell, and this was the first time I'd ever seen her play. Again, this was another superb set and her status as a hard house legend is definately confirmed in my opinion. Kicking off with some belting hard tunes such as Dutch Courage's "Slammin", she moved into more trancier moments before almost taking the roof off with the classic Lee Haslam "Music Is The Drug", a tune which seemed to become a magnet for people to come to the harder floor. Whilst EJ didn't get involved with the crowd as much, she let the music do the talking and her set was wonderfully put together.
Then we come to the big one!! - Ed Real b2b Danny Gilligan, a Riot regular feature which has become somewhat of an urban myth. To put it bluntly, they took each and every arse in The End and kicked it hundreds of times over with some disturbingly hard anthems such as BK's "Bad Ass" and a brilliant mash up of Glazby "Hostile and TDV "Are You All Ready". Their set was cut short however by the late arrival of Alex Kidd who broke down on the way to the club apparantly! Alex pushed the tempo and the bass levels even harder with an awesome array of hardstyle tunes including a number of records by upcoming producer Dark By Design, aka Gaz West. His remixes of Felix "Dont You Want Me" and Heavens Cry "Til Tears Do Us Part" pounded the hell out of the awesome speaker setup in the club, and sent the ever-increasing crowd into an enormous overdrive. By this time you could barely move on the dancefloor and a rock gig-like mosh pit had begun to develop over on one side of the floor, which slowly began to spread across the whole dancefloor as the volume seemingly got even louder!

Suddenly out of nowhere, 2 of the biggest names in hard house, BK & Andy Farley (the self-proclaimed queen of hard house!) took to the main DJ box and this is where it really started. And I mean REALLY started. As soon as BK's first record graced the decks, the beats just got faster, and faster, and harder, and harder!!! The pair absolutely ripped seven shades of turd out of the dancefloor and anyone caught flagging on the floor at this stage was soon brought back up to speed by tunes like the awesome "The Hulk" by Base Graffiti, "Rock Da Spot" and "Are You All Ready". A whole host of hard house stars lined the front dance floor as well, with Todd Tobias, Ali Wilson, Anne Savage, Mark Wilson (Disco Brothers) Ed Real all forming a muntered group at the front of the floor! The quality of the mixing in the set really did shine out as well, Andy Farley's technical skills are hands down the best in the business, no-one can touch this guy as far as technical ability is concerned!
As the beats got harder, a total whirlwind of euphoria just erupted on the floor when BK dropped "Accelerate", the brand new tune by BK & Farley. When the bpms hit fever pitch, a sea of arms just flowed in the air and the whole floor was just swarmed with people in a state of complete ecstacy. This has to be one of the finest hard house tunes ever written, and despite what all the anti-hypists say, it WILL go on to do massive things. To finish off, Andy dropped in future anthem "Crazy Pills" by Ian M, before the bowel-cancer enducing hoovers of TDV "Splashdown" ripped through the system to bring an amazing set to a close.
In the Funky House Room
I can honestly say to anyone planning to go to the next night, its a MUST! Have a quiet saturday night in, get to London for sunday morning and stomp like you've never stomped before, else you're going to live to regret it for sure!! The sound, the DJ's and even the friendly bouncers (!) all helped to make this night one of the best ever and it's no wonder that Riot was voted #1 night in the country in a recent Mixmag. This really is the gem in a black mass of hard rock, miss it and you're a fool.
