Interview with Olly Perris & Ashley Sinclair

Reported by DJGRH / Submitted 25-03-03 09:22

As the hard dance scene searches desperately for innovation and fresh blood, producers such as Guyver and Mark Richardson have stepped onto the big labels and are giving the scene a ‘younger’ outlook and output.

Two names that have recently caught the limelight with their awesome hard and euphoric sounds are Olly Perris and Ashley Sinclair who seem to have already set a trademark sound. Both young, both enthusiastic and I can personally vouch for the fact that their tracks ROCK places like Frantic and Base – across the Southern and Northern scenes.

I decided it was about time that we learnt a bit more about these two and caught up with them with an email interview exclusively for HarderFaster.net.

DJGRH: What are your full names, ages, where were you born and all the other little 'basics'?

Olly: I'm Olly Perris, I'm 18 and I’m from Poole, in Dorset on the south coast

Asha: I'm Ashley Sinclair, I’m 24 and I’m from Southend in Essex

DJGRH: Why did you decide to get into dance music production?

Olly: I used to be a total metal-head and really into rock music originally! Eventually I saw the light through listening to trance in about 1999, when the big anthems came out. I started to mess around with things like Dance Ejay and attempt to make my own tracks! I got frustrated with this (I was about 14 at the time, I had no patience whatsoever!) and took up mixing & DJing instead, before giving it another bash doing some bootleg remixes for me to mess about with. I then started making tracks from scratch and spent ages perfecting what little skill I had, before really pushing to develop it.

Asha: I have been producing stuff at hobby level for about 6 years, but never really had the confidence in my work to go out there and push my stuff until now. Its something I’ve always dreamed of doing ever since buying my first set of turntables when I was just 11 years old. I always wanted to have a bash at production but didn’t have much of a clue how this was done until the day I went with a few pals to the house of Dean Hamilton (Stimulant DJ's / Brisk & Ham fame) when he had just started out with Knightforce and heard him play a track he had made on his computer and was amazed! Was roughly 10 years ago now so pretty sure he won’t remember any of this. But that was the point I decided to save for an Atari ST with Cubase and get learning.

DJGRH: Things have propelled for you recently, can you fill us all in on your current evergrowing discography (at the time of writing)?

Olly:
Out Now:
Ashley Sinclair & Olly Perris - Next Generation EP (Nukleuz)
VG & The Red Hed - Kokane (Ashley Sinclair & Olly Perris Remix) (Nukleuz)

Forthcoming:
Real & Richardson - Sunshine (Ashley Sinclair & Olly Perris Remix) (Nukleuz)
Ashley Sinclair - Zero Zero (w/ Olly Perris Remix) (KCode Records)
Ashley Sinclair & Olly Perris - Take A Ride/Durban Poison (Nukleuz)
Ashley Sinclair & Olly Perris - Atmosphere (Nukleuz)

DJGRH: There is the rumour going around that you guys have never actually met face to face. Explain.

Olly: It's true! We actually first started talking over e-mail and via chat rooms and stuff, and we downloaded each others tracks. From this, we went onto remixing each others tracks to see what we could come up with. The natural step from there was to try to collaborate and that’s how "The Venue" came about. It was simply a load of ideas which we both had put together on one record. Obviously working entirely over the internet, we work a lot slower than conventional partners, but it definitely has it's benefits. We have a good production chemistry where we can trust each others production abilities well. Usually if one of us comes up with something, the other is gonna like it. Therefore we can avoid the problems which conventional partnerships could face, which makes things a lot easier!

DJGRH: You produce predominantly for Nukleuz - how did that come about?

Olly: We sent a CD out to Andy Farley a long time ago after Ashley's first record was signed to Kcode. On the CD, Track 2 was "The Venue". We didn't expect Andy to like it because he was playing a lot of techno at that time and sure enough he didn't reply to us for about a month, so we felt that he didn't like it too much. But out of the blue, we got a freak e-mail last summer from Andy saying that he really liked the track, and he asked us if he could pass it onto Nukleuz. We then got a phone call from BK later on, who passed the track onto Ed Real, who signed it straight away. We were then given the "Move Your Body" remix to do as a test of our abilities and luckily this turned out fine. Ed has taken us under his wing and has really helped us to get our feet off the ground, so obviously we owe a lot to him for our success so far and also obviously Andy Farley as well for picking up on our track in the first place! We've recently been quoted as being Ed's new protégés, which is no bad thing! He's certainly been instrumental to our success so far.

DJGRH: How do you feel about the 'new wave' young producers coming through like Guyver and yourselves?

Olly: We think it's great to see. Obviously there’s been a lot of backlash from a few older producers who claim that we haven't got the experience to produce any good tracks. But if you look at the success of Maddox/Guyver at Tidy Trax, Mark Richardson at Nukleuz, and other new players like Ali Wilson & Jon Rundell, it shows that the new blood can really come through and make an impact. It's a lot harder to break into the scene though if you're new to it, particularly if you're young and don't know much about it. But if the quality is there, as it has been with all the aforementioned people, then it makes things a lot easier and a lot better for the scene as a whole.

DJGRH: I would say that you guys produce quite different sounding material - I note Olly's excellent 'Get Me Drunk' which is more on a Glazby kind of tip, alongside the hard / euphoric stuff you are knocking out for Nukleuz.

Olly: Yeah "Get Me Drunk" has been an odd one! It was made because of a very stressful history essay which prompted a 157bpm hoover track to be born! Unfortunately Nukleuz turned this one down, but it's had a big following from the Bangingtunes forum! We're going to be doing a big hoover tune soon for Nukleuz for the B side of our hard house tune "Atmosphere", so hopefully something a little bit better will be born from that! We're going back down the hard house route this year, as we feel the trance scene has got very crowded & stale, and our forthcoming release "Take A Ride" is an example of the style we're going for now.

DJGRH: What software / hardware are you utilising?

Olly: We use all software on our tracks...The sequencing is done either in Cubase SX or, usually, Acid Pro. We record all our synths & riffs in Fruityloops, as this has the best VST support for quick, easy ideas. We use the Muon Tau Pro, Pro53, Synth1 & TS404 VST's, as well as shedloads of samples from random sample CDs! The best one is Nu House, by Mike Ash - some amazing sounds on there.

DJGRH: If you had the choice, who would you like to co-produce with?

Olly: Ferry Corsten, Chicane and Decoder & Substance. Whilst these aren't hard house producers, they've all produced tracks which have been my favourites of all time. Decoder & Substance (the outfit behind Kosheen) and Chicane produced 2 of the finest albums ever (‘Resist’ & ‘Far From The Maddening Crowds’ respectively) and I’d absolutely love to be able to create this type of music! Hard house wise, certainly BK & also probably Weirdo (Dom Harding) because I admire nearly all of their productions.

Asha: Nick Sentience definitely, his stuff always sounds so fresh and forward-thinking, and his production skills are second-to-none.

DJGRH: Who do you both admire as DJ's / producers?

Olly: Weirdo & BK are my personal favourite hard house producers as it seems they can never put a foot wrong. Every one of their productions oozes quality and the technical edge really place them above a lot of the mediocre breed! DJ wise it's got to be Andy Farley as there's no-one who can work a crowd better than he can. Also, a lot of techno DJ's don't get half the recognition they deserve for their skills - namely Umek & Dave Clarke - both absolutely wicked DJs with a whole host of talents!

Asha: Andy Farley as the DJ, he knows how to rock it every time. As a producer, definitely Nick Sentience, especially his current work, it's all absolutely amazing.

DJGRH: You are most notably known as producers, but do either of you DJ?

Olly: Only bedroom!! I've never played out yet but I’m building up my confidence to get some demo tapes sent out soon.

Asha: I used to play warm up sets at the Ballrooms in Southend but I’ve had nothing since that and have also been bedroom DJing!

DJGRH: What are your future plans and is there anything else you'd like to add?

Olly: Hopefully we're going to be going into the studio with Ed Real very soon, which will be our first ever studio experience and the first time we'll meet up! So that should certainly be very interesting! Also we're going to have a big change to our style this year and we're going to make our tracks a lot harder with a lot more techier noises. The trance sound is becoming more & more stale and we think that by pushing the boundaries back out again, rather than enclosing them further, we can expand ourselves as producers.
