Time to party with Proteus! Reported by kafalicious / Submitted 11-03-03 05:26 Hailing from Helsinki Finland, Proteus is one of those DJs who turns a set into an experience. Combining hard, fast and energetic tunes with the odd bit of scratching and spinning and you can be assured of one wild ride! kaf: Interestingly, the word ‘proteus’ has many meanings including; a type of bacteria, a sea god who could change his shape at will and a computer language! Which one inspired you to name yourself after it? Proteus: I discovered Proteus, my DJ name, about eight years ago and it sounded kind of mystic, powerful and energetic which was like my music style I play; hard, dark nu-nrg and hardtrance. It was a name that suited me fine. kaf: Your involvement with the rave scene extends back to the early nineties where you were a raver and I see you start spinning and promoting in the mid-nineties; focusing on taking the harder sounds to the people. Today you play and promote extensively in the rave, club and fetish scenes both here and in Finland. How do each of the scenes compare and do you prefer one to the others? Proteus: I don’t see so much difference between different scenes. A scene with good music and people creates a great atmosphere and that’s the most important thing in the scene. kaf: Production wise what tunes have you got out there? Proteus: At the moment I don’t have any tunes out yet but I have made a few tunes and hopefully I will get a deal someday. kaf: Tell us a bit about promotional stuff you’ve done and would like to do. Proteus: In the past I organized more underground parties with my friends and I’m still doing it nowadays, but at the moment I have two different clubs going on here in Helsinki. First one is called Säde (which means a laser beam in English) and it’s like a rave party and a club together. It’s a monthly club and we had our opening night in last February with Lab-4, and it was a blast. I have had Säde-organization with my friends for many years and we have organized several separate parties with that name. For example last year we had a big party called No More Rock’n Roll where Kevin Energy and DJ Fury were playing. This year we got a chance to make it monthly. Second club is more like fetish and industrial club and it’s called Inferno. Inferno is like my hobby and I run it with my friends more rarely. It’s also smaller and for at least about 200-300 people. In the future I will continue like the same and make everything with a good attitude. kaf: Current residencies, where else can people catch you perform? Proteus: At the moment I have residencies at Logic in London, and it is one of the greatest things that have happened to me and I really love the people who run it and party there. Other residencies I have are here in Finland; Säde, Inferno, Ever-club and la Resistance. People can catch me playing mostly in Finland in separate parties and clubs and in the UK I have played also for example in Torture Garden and Seed. kaf: First time I saw you, was at Logic’s A Christmas Tale at the Fridge in Brixton. Gotta say I was blown away by your spectacular stage performance and of course your tune selection; hard and fast with some nice turntablism thrown in to boot! How do you describe your style? Proteus: My style is hard, fast and energetic with a lot of technical tricks like scratching and spinning. I also like to dance and have a great time when I’m playing. kaf: Readers can check a fine example of your style with a mix of yours at www.finrg.com. Any others around the place? Proteus: I have made a few mixes for promotional purpose and people can also find them somewhere in the Internet. kaf: For those of us who like it hard and want to get away and party for a weekend in Helsinki, where would you recommend? Proteus: I would recommend of course my own parties : ) and the Rush club, Labyrinth parties and Inkvisitio parties. kaf: I hear that you also have a bit of a name for yourself in Canada? Where else have you performed and where would you like to? Proteus: I regret but it isn’t true. The Canadian Proteus is different person and I don’t know him/her. In addition to UK and Finland I have performed in Estonia. I would like to perform in different countries like Australia, Japan and Canada. I believe that if you work hard and try your best you will gain your dreams. kaf: Have you always incorporated such a spectacular stage show into your sets? What brought about this inclusion? Proteus: Yes I have. I love the music that I play and the whole atmosphere in the parties. Its just what I am, and I can’t help myself : ). Sometimes I also like to excite the audience and make sure that they are having a great time. kaf: What DJ’s / producers out there right now are inspiring you? Proteus: The artists that I love and who have inspired me are Lab-4, Epilim (R.I.P.), Carbon based, Karim, Rubec, Oberon, Mishka, Kevin Energy, DOK, S4, Allen TG, Captain Tinrib, Max Alien Trax, Hellfish and the producer, Ferox, Nuw Idol and Weirdo. kaf: You’re set to hit London again on Friday 14 March for Logic’s & Bangingtunes Second Contact party at the Fridge in Brixton. Got any surprises in store?! Proteus: I’m not gonna tell you, just come to the party and check it out. : ) It’s going to be a blast! kaf: The hard dance scene is a topic hot on the lips of many people. How do you find the London scene, and how does it compare to Helsinki and other cities you’ve performed at? Proteus: London IS the scene because you have all the best artists and parties there. Helsinki is so much smaller city and the Finnish scene isn’t so big. Party people in London and Helsinki are a bit similar and the music taste is about the same. Finnish people like it really hard, for example you can play even 180-200 BPM if you want. But I don’t usually play so hard and my sets are not different between Finland and UK parties. kaf: What do you think makes a DJ ‘great’?! Proteus: Technical skills are very important with a good tune selection. It’s important hat DJ plays the music he/she likes. It’s also good that DJ follows the audience and their reactions. Of course always remember to have a good time. : ) kaf: To MC or not MC – what’s your stance?! Proteus: I prefer not MC, but sometimes a good MC rocks.
