Hard Kandy, Melboure - Review

It was time for yet another onslaught of UK talent on Friday night as Hard Kandy had lined up two of its most regular internationals, Dave Randall (Nukleuz/Dance Valley/Superfish) and Paul Brisk(Stimulant Records/Next Generation Records/Blatant Beats). When I arrived at the club, Brett Little was spinning out some of the UK’s finest Hard Dance tunes. Brett Little was once a HK regular but had recently ventured off to the UK and now he was also back in town with a record box full of new sounds.
My first impressions of Friday night were of the decor. Billboard is going through some renovations at the moment, but this didn’t stop the decor crew from yet again supplying us with visual delights. Streams of red material that draped from the ceiling to the floor set the mood for what was going to end up as one of my most memorable nights at the club. Brett Little continued his set, warming up the crowd well and gaining the interest of the already large number of punters who were wandering into the club.
At 1:30am it was time for me (Kelsta) to jump up behind the decks. I took over from Brett and opened with a new tune that myself and Steve Nichols have just completed, called “Come Out and Play". I followed that with “Aspirations”, the first track that Steve and I produced which has come to be a sentimental favourite with the HK crew. It was time to speed things up a bit and time to drop some of my much loved techier tunes. Slowly but surely the numbers started to invade the dance floor and to my delight at 2am, Dave Randall jumped up with me for a back-to-back session that will go down in my books as one of the most enjoyable and fun sets I have ever played.
Dave and I had planned to play back to back for an hour, to raise the level of the room with our blend of funky techno and hard dance. It was great to see the smile on Dave’s face as he turned around with another new techno track in his hand, poised to entertain the HK crowd with the sounds that he loves best. Before I knew it, 3 hours had passed and Dave and I had played the full stretch of his set and mine, back-to-back. Dave was spot on as usual; showing the crowd just how much fun techno can be when played well. We worked really well together, feeding and flowing off each other’s music and working with the crowd to keep their feet well planted on the HK dance floor. Playing the new "RAW 13" by Guy McAffer, along side some Adam Beyer and some funky D.A.V.E The Drummer (Hydraulix 9), Dave Randall certainly had the crowd’s respect. At 4am, we made way for a Kandy favourite, Jeremy K.
Jeremy continued with the tech theme and was quite impressive. He mixed up his darker tunes that we have all grown to enjoy along side some much more minimal music. I think it was music that Jeremy doesn’t often get to play at the club, but judging from the smile on his face, he was certainly enjoying it. Jeremy is one of most technically perfect DJ’s in Melbourne and he always plays well on the night; reading the crowd and surging the energy levels with every mix.
It was a great build up to Brisk’s set; who has easily become family to us at Kandy and who is definitely the most in demand UK DJ at our club. Yet again he did not fail to impress. He played some of his new Stimulant Records releases, which certainly caught my attention as a DJ and aroused the excitement once again with the masses of people stomping away and cheering on the dance floor (keep your eyes out for Stim 25 and 26!!). Brisk is one of those DJ’s who gets up there and plays to the crowd, interacting with the smiling faces and making your night a whole lot of fun. It was his last set at Kandy for a while and he went out in style, leaving all of the HK people with many memories of great music, hopefully enough to keep us going till his next visit.
Ajax and Krash soon took over from Brisk and it was great to see these back behind the decks playing a Vs set. It has been a while since I have watched these two play together and it was great to hear their blend of Hard Trance and Hard House, coupled with the cheekiness of Ajax and the drive of Krash. The boys did not give the crowd any excuse to leave the dance floor in a set well played.
To finish what had already been a top-notch night, Nexus and Scott Alert rose to the occasion, starting off their set in their usual banging fashion, before deciding to mix things up a bit with some old school “fluff” The club seemed to attract a bundle of people around 6am, which helped pave the way for one rocking morning. Nexus played a few of my favourites from his Kandy CD release, my most favourite being “Amnesia” by Alex Bartlett. It really did have everyone’s hands in the air and the room filled with cheers, we knew we were set for one hell of a morning. It wasn’t long before some classics started to fill the speakers. “Be Liquid” by Melt was played as well as “Carte Blanche” and even a tired Brisk was out on the dance floor bopping away to the beats. Both Scott and Nexus set flowed with such energy and vibrancy that time passed too quickly and all too soon it was over. Over that is, except for that infamous “last tune”.
A quick request from a couple of us and “Universal Nation – Push” was played (yes, that track that goes woo!) which really was the perfect way to end a great night at Kandy. I looked around and was impressed to still see so many punters rocking away on the floor even though it was the end of the night. Once again big ups to the Kandy Kollective, Jacinta and the crew for putting on a night that I am glad I did not miss.
A huge than you too to Paul Brisk from all of us at the Kandy Kollective for giving us so many fun nights over the past 6 weeks. We certainly are the lucky ones to have had him down and as a resident for those 6 weeks. Maximum respect goes out to him. Thanks too to Dave Randall for the chance to belt out 3 ours of mayhem with him. It made my night one to remember and listening to the feedback from the punters on the night, one night for them to remember too.
