"SIZE MATTERS! SIZE MATTERS!" screamed my last ex-girlfriend as she walked out of my life and slammed the door behind her. You see, I am just too 'old', 'seasoned' and 'jaded' to be bothered about something as trivial as size. Big, I have learnt, does not necessarily mean better.
This is what I tried to tell her anyway when she sat eagerly waving the flyer for Heat NYE @ Brixton Academy in front of me. Magnificent and fantastic it was doubtless going to be, I just "didn't fancy it" and I declared that I would prefer to go somewhere a little bit smaller. At this moment her puppy dog eyes turned into meteoric fireballs sent from the very bowels of Lucifer himself as she screwed up the names of K90, BK and Anne Savage into a tight, neat ball and threw it at my face.
I laughed [she missed] as she stormed out of the room and I was left to happily contemplate all things small and compact. I immediately stopped laughing when I realised that 'small' and 'compact' meant I was heading for a New Year's Eve at the George IV…
This is where becomeone gracefully stepped in to offer a NYE event that would be intimate and cosy in a venue that is centralised, well formed and simply good fun to throw a party in. This was to be the solution for the full house of 100+ people who turned up wanting something a little bit more personal for their New Year's celebrations.
There were quite a few reasons as to why becomeone @ Sub (Logic) had the potential to be the perfect NYE party. Most compelling at first was that it was remarkably cheap - at £15-£18 a ticket it was cheaper than the £20 the upstairs bar was charging for its separate event.
Secondly, becomeone (which has previously had Steve Hill and Marc French play as guests) has the following and organisation to ensure that a party like this would be guaranteed to kick off. The move away from The Griffin to Sub (Logic) in Oxford Circus was superb - this venue was the perfect host for a very friendly crowd that combined to give the event the decisive, winning edge: the 'house party' atmosphere.
And of course, there was the music…
I stepped in at 8.05pm precisely just as Ben 'The Scene' Green was executing an exquisite spin-back. People were already on the dancefloor grooving and shaking their ass, and no wonder - this guy likes it funky! As the dulcet tones of Who Da Funk's 'Shiny Disco Balls', 'Love Story Vs Chase The Sun' by Layo and Bushwacka Vs Planet Funk and Together's 'So Much Love To Give' drifted dreamily around the room Ben 'The Scene' Green was giving appreciative nods, twinkling smiles and suave winks to the crowd - just like 007 on the hunt for Pussy Galore. At the end of his set we all clinked glasses of champagne and I was now safe in the knowledge that I had at last found out who had taught James Bond how to arch his eyebrow.
Flash came on and served up some more delicious funk and it was at this point, while admiring the lovely balloons bobbing against the ceiling through my drunken gaze, that I noticed Deirdre the Duck hanging by her neck from the roof. Now, she may only be a stuffed toy but if I'd been forcibly buggered (click here for the evidence) by a fully grown man then I’d probably commit suicide too. Alas, Deirdre was also stolen - will she be returned??
By the time I'd finished grieving, Tim Davison had taken over the helm and added a bit more pace to the evening's proceedings. A great set that included two gems from The Chemical Brothers - 'Out of Control' and 'Hey Boy, Hey Girl' - and one that also impressed me enough to go try and scrounge a demo - "Hey, Tim! I loved your set! I REALLY REALLY LOVED YOUR SET!"
Next up was Oliver Leighs, a guy who has shown great potential whenever he has played out. I have to admit that I became an admirer too, especially during the killer breakdown of Reloop's 'Fucking Society' as I found myself in the front row of the crowd and joining in doing that wonderful 'TUNE!' sign with my hands (Champagne AND 'TUNE!' signs?!).
By this point I was just too drunk to think about being a Class A sycophant by going over to say "Hey, Oliver! I loved your set! I REALLY REALLY LOVED YOUR SET!". I was much more preoccupied with clapping my hands and swaying from side-to-side while making strange 'whooping' noises (much like a chimp does when trying to earn a banana from a zoo-keeper) as Shaun Rowland appeared with his 'Magic Box of Trance Classics'.
Now, I may love my hard stuff, but hearing those Euro-trance anthems from years gone by still hits the spot. So it was that I found myself mumbling along to the lyrics of 'Pearl River' by Johnny Shaker, reaching for the skies during System F's 'Out of the Blue' and giving sweaty kisses and hugs to everyone as THE MIDNIGHT TUNE - Rank One's 'Airwave' boomed out of the speakers and everyone wished everyone else a Happy New Year!
Then there was Ian Van Dahl's 'Castles in the Sky'… and I didn't walk off the dancefloor! I was so drunk that I easily managed to convince myself that this must be the new Ian M mix and gleefully carried on making 'TUNE!' signs and quaffing champers.
The stage was set for Ground Zero's Daegal Brain who was also joined by Stuffed Toy No. 2 - Donkey. As a DJ, Daegal Brain is technically very acute and has more tricks than the 'Paul Daniels presents 'Macabre and Astounding Magic'' board game that my Uncle bought me from the Poundshop for Xmas. It was here that I noticed Donkey crouched in front of the mixer gazing forlornly up at poor old Deirdre the Duck as she swayed to the beats of Basement Jaxx's 'Where's Your Head At?'. The question is: did he also witness the kidnapping too?…
A miss c and Stewart Rae B2B closed the party, upping the tempo with some harder beats such as Ewok's 'Supersound' and the record no NYE party is complete without - 'Born Slippy'.
As becomeone carried on well past its 3am scheduled finishing time, I was off, too 'old', 'seasoned' and 'jaded' (i.e., drunk) to be staying out until dawn. So, it was time to go and get a good night's sleep to ensure that I got up in time on New Year's Day to watch the final of 'World's Strongest Man' - "He's got biceps thicker than most people's thighs!"
Nevertheless, a faultless NYE party from the becomeone crew - a massive pat on the back to them all!
