Interview with BK @ Enzos 23/11/02

Reported by Robert Muir / Submitted 08-12-02 15:58

BK is a legend in the making, with a production list that is set in gold. Can you honestly say you have been to an event where a track by BK hasn’t been played!
I caught him at Enzos and it was a sight for sore eyes, I rarely see him play myself outside London or in the North – and it was a pleasure...

Robert Muir: So Ben, how did you get your break?

BK: I have always worked in studios from the age of 16/17. I started as a tea boy/runner and that led to me becoming an engineer. I then got the opportunity to become an engineer for Media Records who own Nukleuz, which gave me the opportunity of producing my own stuff.

RM: Were you helped on your way ?

BK: I received a lot of support and direction from DJ/producers such as Tony De Vit, Ian M. and Pete Wardman as I would often take them acetates of new material and closely listen to their feedback.

RM: You worked a lot with Lisa Pin Up, any more classics on the way?

BK: Nothing planned at the moment as I have lots of production deadlines to meet.

RM: How did you meet Ed Jenkins @ Nukleuz?

BK: I was already working at Nukleuz when he started.

RM: Do you think the scene has progressed in forms of productions over the last year?

BK: Yes, it’s encompassed a lot of different styles to progress to a new hybrid sound by merging trance, techno and traditional hard house etc

RM: Revolution was the main track over the summer and proberly still is now, did you expect it to be as huge as it’s become?

BK: NO!

RM: Chart success with Revolution – did you expect it to reach the position it did.

BK: The big stores such as HMV refused to stock any CD singles so any charts success is based on vinyl sales only. I find out on Sunday.

RM: I recently read in the Judge Jules Interview (by Tom Allen @ HarderFaster) that he thought you were the most improved producer over the last 12 months – what do you thinks of his comment?

BK: Very flattering as he is one of the top DJ’s in his field.

RM: What has been the highlight of your career so far?

BK: Playing at Trade’s closing party was amazing; the atmosphere was one of the best I have experienced in a club to date as well as playing at Dance Valley and Impulz and playing to 40,000 people.

RM: As everyone’s favourite producer out there today, how do you test your new productions?

BK: Quite often I finish something on a Friday cut a CD play it that night and over the weekend, see how it goes down and if it needs changing I’ll do it the following week. I also give it out to DJ’s whose opinion I trust and respect and get feedback from them.

RM: What do you listen to at home apart from Hard House?

BK: I really like the Sugababes.

RM: Tony De Vit in my eyes was the greatest Producer/DJ that there has ever been, whom do you rate as the crème de la crème?

BK: Tony De Vit has been the biggest influence on my career. I went to Trade every week for 4 years to see him play as well as people like Liam from the Prodigy for his brilliant production skills.

RM: I’ve got to ask, what tunes still blow you mind, and still give you goose bumps? – mine has to be De Vit’s remix of “Hooked” and the Stimulant DJs “Hoover Time”.

BK: Are you all ready by Tony De Vit and the original mix of Marmion Schoneberg.

RM: Now that’s the past tracks – what are you playing at the moment that people are really responding to? – Mine has to be Paul Jane’s RMX of Glazbys “Kick it”

BK: A new track called Butterflies by EJ Doubell and myself; a new track by Andy Farley and myself called Facefacts as well as some new Glazby material that’s doing the business.

RM: Do you prefer the studio or DJing?

BK: Both are two completely different buzzes. I love them both.

RM: Do you have any plans for your own record label – in the future?

BK: No, I like to make records not sell them.

RM: One last one Ben, what all time classic line up would you love to witness if you were out clubbing yourself? (Past DJs OR Present).

BK: Would probably be one of the original Trade line-ups Malcolm Duffy, Alan Thompson, Steve Thomas, Tony De Vit, Ian M and Pete Wardman with Carl Cox, Umec and Marco V thrown in for good measure.

With thanks to BK for his time.

Thanks to mrbicgit and boshmaster for the use of their photos Thumbs up
