Interview with Lisa Lashes

Reported by tom / Submitted 03-10-02 14:43

Widely considered the First lady of Hard House, Tidy Girl Lisa Lashes has been at the very top of the scene in the UK and worldwide for several years. She was also voted number 9 in the world in DJ magazines top 100 poll making her the the highest ranking female DJ. HarderFaster fired a few questions at Lisa before her set at Chemistry this weekend:

HarderFaster: Your first gig was a boat party on the River Severn 5 years ago: how did you first get into DJing and how did that first booking come about ?

Lisa Lashes: Basically through a friend who had a pair of decks, I played at that party and Madders from Sundissential saw me play and booked me after!

HF: What was your first big break as a DJ ?

LL: Getting my residency at Sundissential in Birmingham

HF: At what point did you decide to become a professional DJ ?

LL: It just happened really, one minute I was holding down a job and the next week I was DJing nearly full time!

HF: What were the circumstances in which you became a Tidy girl ?

LL: Tidy Trax approached us and the rest of the girls to put together an album and the rest as they say is history!

HF: What was the reaction to your set like when you played in China ?

LL: I was very happy, Very Crazy Chinese Clubber….

HF: Which is your favourite overseas country to play and why ?

LL: Ibiza in the summer and then Oz, cause its really going off over there with the big festivals like Gatecrasher and so on…Plus the weather of course!

HF: You've just come back from a tour of Japan and Malaysia - what's the scene like over there ? What sort of tunes have been going down well ?

LL: They just love the hard house music, it was fantastic to go half way around the world and see that they are in to it in a big way!

HF: How would you categorise the style of music you play ?

LL: Extremely Hard, extremely uplifting & extremely good! A bit cheeky really, just nicked it off my latest mix album.

HF: You used to play UK hard house but the last few times we've heard you play you've played a bit trancier, and even a bit techno-y in places.. is that a conscious change of tack for you ?

LL: Yeah but its always hard in whatever style, am always looking to push it a little bit further, if you know what I mean…

HF: Who are your favourite producers, UK and foreign ?

LL: So many... Andy Farley, Paul Glazby, Ilogik and Anne Savage are doing some really good stuff and am loving some of the dutch and german imports.

HF: What’s the strangest thing a 'fan' has done to get your attention ?

LL: This girl at Hotdog keep flashing her boobs and the first time a guy asked me to marry him, it happens all the time now!

HF: In what ways do you think the hard dance scene has progressed in the last couple of years ?

LL: I suppose it's just got older and hence more mature, its starting to take on board other influences, and the industry are know realising that it's here to stay!

HF: Do you think that hard dance has lost its fun factor?

LL: No, not at all… it will always be high energy madness, lots of fun and folics, the young clubbers coming through and bringing there own look and feel.

HF: Why is hard trance so popular now, isn't it just a case of everyone jumping on the same bandwagon?

LL: Is it not because it’s the best of both?

HF: Which DJs and artists do you most respect?

LL: Tony De Vit…..

HF: What music do you listen to outside of hard dance?

LL: All sorts really, from chill out to Rnb, Robbie Williams to Barbara Streisand…look out for a new all girl band called Melodi Brown, a cross between rock and rnb, been thrashing their demo stuff for a long time!

HF: As someone who plays nationwide - what difference do you see between the scene in the North and in the South (particularly London)

LL: You’re getting a bit risky now!....i love playing everywhere I go, it’s a question I get asked a lot and all I can say is every place is different as are the people, so it's very hard to compare really!

HF: Do you plan your sets in advance?

LL: Never, no no and no…

HF: What and where was the most enjoyable set you’ve ever played and why was it so good ?

LL: Just lately it has to be the Japan gig, its great to see a new scene kicking off over there and I am really looking forward to going again!

HF: Who dances better, northerners or southerners ?

LL: Midlanders...ha ha

HF: What do you think of the London hard dance/trance scene and would you like to play here more often than you already do?

LL: Of course I would love to play more often in London cause its got some really cool things going on!

HF: Your last appearance in London for XStatic was cut short which disappointed a lot of your fans who were there to see you play - can you tell us what happened that night ?

LL: Personal reason, never happened before and its not going to happen again…

HF: As far as we know this is your first set for Convergence – what have you heard about their parties and what sort of set are you going to play ?

LL: I have heard it's just simply the best! And I am going to get you lashed!

HF: Unbelievable was possibly your biggest ever tune: after recording it did you realise you had a monster on your hands or was it only after seeing the crowd reactions after playing it ?

LL: I never realised it was going to be so big, but you have to thank the clubbers, they're the ones that make the tunes big!

HF: Do you think Lab4's remix of Unbelievable did the original justice ? Have you been giving their remix play time yourself ?

LL: I still play the original…

HF: What other productions work do you have in the pipeline ?

LL: I have another Extreme album coming out in December which I am working on now, also a few new tracks, so watch this space!

HF: Any upcoming releases that you can mention that have been welded to your slipmats in the past few weeks ?

LL: Your Fear – Andy Farley

HF: (question we ask everyone, sorry !): What are your top 3 dance tracks of all time ?

LL: Judy Cheeks – Reach, Tony De Vit – The Dawn, Orbital – Belfast

HF: Thank you for your time Lisa.
