Heat - Review

It may be Heat's second outing at Turnmills, but the perfect pairing of the king of Saturday afternoon parties and this legendary venue still seems almost too good to be true. Although we may have grown to our love muddy arches, dank basements and tatty ex-cinemas, Heat's selection of plush venues has raised the standards of underground clubbing, and Turnmills is the icing on the cake.
The club looked great - the bar was decked out with swathes of colourful fabric, dangling, light-catching plastic strips and junior spiky inflatables, presumably in order to get the more energetic clubbers in the mood for Frantic later on. The ever friendly, fresh and bouncy Heat crowd looked pretty good too, having totally gone to town on the Hawaiian theme - floral garlands, bikinis, grass skirts and flip flops were a plenty, not to mention so many garish shirts you'd be forgiven for thinking it was the monthly gathering of the Tom Selleck appreciation society.
An unexpected and welcome surprise was the almost-pub-level drink prices - a good move by a venue that has been known to lighten the wallet by almost £20 for three JD and cokes. This resulted in everybody cheerfully pouring alcopops and lager down their necks like it was going out of fashion, before rushing back onto the dancefloor to soak up the joys of that pumping sound system.
Although the very glam funky room was busy, the lure of the main room was too strong for most. Each DJ kept up the relentless barrage of top tunes, to the extent that you couldn’t to go to the loo in case you missed something. The colourful lights had been cranked up since the last party, illuminating Turnmills' normally dark and slightly seedy corners, as well as the sea of smiling faces.
An important date with David Beckham meant I missed out on DVS' opening set, which by all accounts got the party off to a rocking start. Mischief resident Steve Norrie was next on the decks, whipping the assorted crowd of hula hula girls (and boys), beach bums and land-locked surfers into a Saturday afternoon frenzy with his unmistakable cheeky, pumping house. Owen B then transported Turnmills to trance heaven for an hour and a half, before Phil Reynolds’ pounding, upfront and edgy set took the party into the evening and onto the next level. Nice shirt, too.
Heat resident Marc French kept hands in the air and Sketchers skipping with wave after wave of crowd-pleasing trance and hard house classics. The perfect end to the evening was a tremendous uplifting set from Bill 'Daniel' Bunter, whose tunes kept a now knackered-looking crowd pinned to the dancefloor, even after the house lights went up.
This particular party seemed to have extra special, friendly vibe, with everybody chatting and sharing in the manner of an 1988 warehouse rave, without the Vicks vapo-rub and white gloves. As a dancefloor neighbour commented: 'The best thing about Heat is the crowd - they're just gloriously happy!’ I bumped into a couple of bemused but beaming regulars of Turnmill's Friday night ‘Gallery’, who'd popped their heads in after England's footie win, and by the end of the night were promising to see us at the next one - two more Heat converts.
Saturday afternoon clubbing? Sure beats the crap out of washing the car.

Great report, captured succinctly the vibe of Heat and confirms what some people having been saying for a long time that Turnmills is best venue in London.
