MAINFRAME 01-06-02
Lotherton Hall, Leeds
Only to be viewed by dedicated loyal hard core clubbers... (ad)venture with me...
Friday 11:53pm. In my PJ’s and ready for bed. Try to sleep. Can’t sleep. Restless. Anxious and too excited because you don’t want to miss the coach to MAINFRAME in a few hours...
After a wake-up call from my “superhero” clubbing buddy, we’re off to Victoria station to board our Red Rented Roadster (or coach if you like) to begin our Jubileeeee weekend. 60 slightly subdued (but all dressed up) clubbers exchanging names, sms-ing, smoking, catching Z’s, overall just killing 4 hours on the road (it was 8am on a Saturday after all!) Big, wide open green spaces with trees and deer and prams and parents and old couples and squirrels and beautiful sunlight welcomed us in Leeds.
First to arrive, but that’s OK
Followed the yellow poster-path just to reach a closed gate, but that’s OK too (it being midday)
“When can we go inside?” - “We open at 5pm.” (!!%*&£??)
That was not so OK...
Q became the most unpopular letter
“Patience is the art of concealing impatience”, hey Storky?
At least we got to talk and tan more than expected!
By 4:30pm the organisers started teasing us by testing the sound systems in the tents through playing short brilliant beats and then stopping! But, you know what, ALL that waiting, queuing and agitation was ALL forgotten and forgiven as soon as the gates opened and the Q started moving (quickly) and the music call us with a burning enthusiasm!
My first impression: Organised chaos.
I stood right in the centre, by the popular Red Bull stall and made 3 slow 360? clockwise turns.
Entrance-sniffer dogs-colourful clothing stalls-glowstick stall-Sundissential dance tent-chill-out tent-Insomnia tent-fun rides-Storm dance tent-Paramedics-cloakroom-toilets for the masses-free water section (nice one)-food stalls-Entrance...
A bit overwhelming: The more you look, the more you see, the more it all makes sense, the more you get caught up in the festival spiral! Simply FanBloodyTastic!
Before we continue, put your favourite hard house CD in, quickly (even the one at the top of the pile will do). However, if you are at work, now would be a good time to pretend that you’re using the new hands-free phone set which your company started using 3 weeks ago.
So much to do and so many great songs to dance to that I feel like de-morphing myself so that I can be in two places at once.
Pace yourself. Create a personal planner of DJ’s (who, where, when). Feeling hungry? Eat. Feeling thirsty? Drink. Clubbing is simple:
Enter – Eat – Energise – Exercise – Exhale.
I’m a minger who likes to mingle...
The people made a real effort to dress up and express themselves. Some were on a mission:
“It’s getting rough out here...I’m gonna deliver to the world, a world worth saving! – Zyborg
Some dressed up as robots or nurses – the point is: ANYTHING goes as long as you’re colourful, comfortable and connected. Neon green, pink and yellow clothing with furry animal bags on your back seemed to be the fashion.
“We’re like soft toys with glowsticks” – Lara
It’s energising to see everyone enjoying themselves, sharing the feeling, and living the music. We were so privileged and spoiled to have such a good selection of TOP hard house DJ’s in one night! A few thousand clubbers were spread out between the tents, while at least another thousand sat in groups on the grass drinking, chatting, chilling, planning.
Great dance surfaces inside the tents. Lively and bright decorations, massive speakers and exhilarating lasers (later on), combined with the inspirational tunes, produced a high-energy fast paced night. It was quite refreshing to walk outside between the tents and find that it is still light till late (10pm). If you catch a bit of a downer, all you need is little K90. The energy is infectious. He loves psyching us up – and we love him for that! Or, if you just want a quick cheap head rush, follow me and do a handstand!
We are an alien generation, but united members
Music is our FUEL.
Thank you STORM, NUKLEUZ, FRANTIC, INSOMNIA and SUNDISSENTIAL for providing premium fuel!
Lisa Pin-Up is what we needed at 11pm. I’ve only heard her play once before at Brixton Academy (Oct 2000) – the night I was converted to clubbing! She makes you stomp harder faster harder faster harder faster!
Oh, what’s this? Robert Miles’ Children, dramatically re-invented by Lisa Pin-Up. Jumpy bouncy tunes – the crowd loved it!
After 90min of Anne Savage in charge of the decks, my legs needed a break. She played a perfect balance between build ups and intense dancing – the feminine touch I guess.
At the start of the night we were a few thousand individuals but as Kevin Wallace said when I asked his opinion of MF, he replied, “Festivals bring us together – keep the culture alive!”
I blame BK, Spencer Freeland and Phil Reynolds for losing my voice but they are SOOOO worth it. Another common injury I found amongst the clubbers on the night was glowstick knuckle bruise – what do you expect when you grip the stick for 12 hrs!
“MAINFRAME lived up to it’s expectations and more” – Aden
“This beats London clubbing” – Andrew
Personally, I think the music could have been even louder and the tents could have been fuller if more people turned up. The crowds thinned out towards the end of the night and only a few hundred loyal and dedicated dancers kept going till 6am.
Somehow the fresh morning light and danced out shoes lead us back to the coach. Although we had a long journey back, the coach provided us with safe, quiet, relaxing seats. Back in London, it was now time to step out of our comfort zone, de-zombie-fy at home, get up, get going and go tell the Queen about MAINFRAME!
Become part of the non-stop nation.
MF scores an 8/10
