Mind Over Matter - Review

The contenders for the night’s battle were ‘Mind Over Matter’, ‘Megabyte’ and ‘Immersed’, the venue is ‘The Camden Palace’, it could only be one thing - ‘Best Of British part 2’ The Rematch. With the much talked about success of the previous ‘Best of British’ I could tell I was in for an absolutely AMAZING night.
I arrived at the ‘Camden Palace’ at about 10.20pm and for those of you who haven’t been before, ‘The Camden Palace is a converted old Theatre with a wonderfully big main stage and dance floor encircled with a maze of walkways, corridors and balconies. As soon as you step inside a large foyer overwhelms you and a sudden burst of Hard House comes pulsating through the walls. Past the foyer you come to the cloakrooms situated either side of the main entrance leading down to the Palace, a reflective metallic walkway that takes you down to the main Balcony, which allows you to watch over the dance floor.
On entering the main room I was greeted by the sounds of none other than K. Cut (resident DJ for ‘Mind Over Matter’ and ‘SunnySideUp’) who was banging out some of the best new bouncy hard house tunes to get the ravers in the mood and on the dance floor for the quite obvious pukka night ahead! Feeling quite tired from bouncing around like a disturbed rabbit with three legs from K.Cut’s warm up, and after getting many odd looks from my fellow ravers I decide it was time to go to one of the seven bars situated all over the palace and get a couple of drinks to calm me down.
With the tunes in the main room becoming not to my taste I find myself venturing off to the Black and White room, where it is absolutely PACKED out, and Matt Mara is playing an excellent set banging out wicked tunes time and time again! With the music quality being spot on I find it difficult to be drawn away until I hear that Shaun Hull (resident DJ and promoter of ‘Megabyte’) has stepped up onto the decks in the main room. Unfortunately I later realize that Shaun Hull had not just stepped up but had been playing for at least 30minutes, but luckily enough I managed to get the very end of his set which could be described as not far off blinding with him ripping out the best bouncy tunes again and again.
As the time now approached 1.15am, Skol (Resident DJ for ‘Mind Over Matter’ and ‘SunnySideup’) takes his place at the decks where he has no problem taking over from Shaun Hull with his set being only described as absolutely fabulous. By this time the Palace had become more and more packed out, and a lot more people had found their way to the dance floor and who could blame them as the tunes were wicked and the atmosphere was out of this world! The Camden Palace had well and truly gone off in proper SUNNYS style!!! By 2.30am the Palace was alive and everyone knew about it, and what best to have live PA from K90 to follow up from Skol’s fabulous set! Unfortunately K90 was not to my taste so I decided to retire to the Black and White room, where I was welcomed by awesome tunes being banged out by Charlie Lambert (Resident Dj for Megabyte), also it was wicked to see lots of the Megabyte crew supporting one of their Dj’s!
Come 4am and only 2 hours to go till we got kicked out onto the streets what best than to spend the remainder of the time I had stomping away like a mad man on the main dance floor! And With Ed Real ripping up the dance floor with his ultimate tune selection you couldn’t of asked for anything else! With 6am coming ever closer the main dance floor was starting to thin out leaving only the proper hard house nutters still stomping away, and for the ravers who stayed till the end were nicely rewarded with Dan Madams, finishing off the night with the final set which could only be described as one of the best sets I have heard so far this year!
All in all this was one of the best Mind Over Matter’s I had been to in a long time, a top class night. The music, atmosphere, and people were exactly spot on, a true clubber couldn’t of asked for anything else !
The next Mind over Matter is on the 28th March when it is Sunnyside Up’s 8th Birthday celebrations at the Camden Palace.
