Interview with the Energy UK Djs Reported by Dickon Laws / Submitted 19-03-02 11:51 Scanning the net for dance related topics you will find many sites spread over many different countries each with their own views on the music and the individuals within the music. Some are worth nothing more than a casual flick and some grab your attention for any number of reasons. ENERGY UK has side stepped both of these options and has turned into what can only be described as an Institution. The sites fame is renowned through out the highest echelons of the dance music industry for being a vital source of information and to provide contact with what might be otherwise unreachable parties. Very few sites can claim to have ground breaking interviews with some of the highest profile DJ's and producers of the Scene alongside one of the most dedicated music productions sections around. And the two men behind this Internet enigma are Messrs Pat Lynes and Graeme Stoker. Not only are they the brains behind the innovations of the site they are also held in very high esteem as DJ's and producers across the UK and into Europe. The lads, otherwise known as Graeme EUK & Pat EUK were interviewed by Dickon Laws for Synthetic and this article is kindly reproduced here: Dickon Laws: Energy UK has set a very high standard for rest to follow in terms of interviews and information accessible in essence by the entire world. When you first started out did you perceive that 3 years down the line it would have generated such a following and be so highly respected with in the dance music fraternity? EUK: To be honest, when the site first kicked off we didn’t really have any expectations. It was started as a hobby, just really something to do to tell people about the tunes and scene we were passionate about. Its actually 4 years since EUK launched, originally just with Graeme, but Pat joined one year in, and it was really then that with two minds on the job, things started to happen. Things in the early days weren’t really planned, to be honest the site has just developed organically as its grown in prominence and support. It was really about 2 years ago that we started to seriously think about the direction that we wanted EUK to take, so that’s where the real effort to think of a positive development and direction for EUK started. DL: The site is obviously going from strength to strength with new features and interviews being added on a weekly basis. With so much already accomplished where do you see the site and the whole EUK ethos heading in the immediate future? EUK: The ethos of EUK has always been, and will always be the same – keep it simple and provide information that people want to read about with the minimum amount of bollocks. We’ve always had bags of new ideas to keep the site fresh and with the growing support from industry folks and fellow clubbers there’s no shortage of ideas for new material. In the near future we see the development of the music production side of the site as being very important, and also this year we hope that our forthcoming North American section will help to open up our scene to more clubbers in the US and Canada. DL: We must draw attention to the EUK Readers Poll awards which have now become a highlight of the underground dance music calendar with all manner of folk both voting and logging on to see has been awarded the honours this year. When you first instigated the awards did you have any idea as to the response you would receive after such a short time? EUK: The Readers Poll was really just another ‘pub idea’ which made it to the live site. We thought it would be interesting to see what people actually thought about the scene, as an indication of opinion, and I think that its fair to say that its grown in prominence a lot more than we thought it would. I guess that we didn’t really appreciate how seriously the awards would be taken within the industry, so over the past 3 years its been a real industry vote of confidence in EUK to hear the likes of the folks in the Nukleuz office being proud of winning our awards. Here’s another example which really blew us away – last year’s New Label winner Freezing Point put the fact that they’d won on an ad in Ministry Magazine – nice!! DL: Your both accomplished DJ's and producers but you both have other focuses in your lives as well. Pat is completing his course at Uni and Graeme works fulltime. Can you see a point in the future when you would be able to and want to give up the other focuses and concentrate on EUK/DJing/Producing in a full time capacity? EUK: Obviously we’d both love to concentrate on our music full time, but we’re realistic enough to know that only a handful of people can make a full time living from our scene. Basically, we just enjoy what we do and have no plans to change that, but that’s not to say that as the site progresses and our aspirations for out careers as DJs and producers develop, that things may change. With the launch of Energy UK Records in the summer, who can say what will happen… DL: You've produced tracks with likes of Nick Rafferty & Co and had your own tracks remixed by Yoji Biomekanika. For both of you is there any artist that if you worked with would signal that you had reached a pinnacle in your career? EUK: We don’t really think that there will ever be a pinnacle of our career as we’ll always enjoy DJing, producing and pushing ourselves further and generally just being involved in the scene, irrespective of what ‘level’ or status we’ve reached. Its obviously great to be able to put things back into the scene so we just continue to do what we do to the best of our abilities, and hope that people enjoy what we do, whether it be as DJs, producers or writers for the site. However, we’d love to work with the likes of BK, Jon Doe, Andy Farley, etc, as well as the likes of Marco V and Chris Vareland – I guess we’ll just have to see the way things develop. DL: Your strongly affiliated with 'Vicious Circle Records' and they now represent you in a management capacity. Is VC a label whose musical policy you feel echoes your own work? and are there any other labels you would like to release for in view of their musical policies? EUK: As time has progressed we’ve become good friends with Scott and Paul at Vicious Circle, and having pushed a number of gigs our way we’re very grateful to the help they’ve given us. I think that the VC musical policy and ours are a bit different, but we’re bang into what they’re doing and there’s a heck of a lot of common ground between what we do and what they do. Of course we’d love to put an EUK DJs tune out on VC, one for the future maybe?? As for other labels we’d like to have our tunes appear on, obviously Nukleuz is a big aspiration, but otherwise we’re always interested in working with any labels with open minded musical tastes. DL: You have both played at some of the biggest events in Europe with some of the biggest names in Europe but is there was one event you had to pick out of all of them which was extra special then which would it be and why? EUK: Without a question, the gigs we’ve done for the massive Dutch Dancevalley organisation, i.e. HQ. We’ve been lucky enough to do a few gigs for them now in Holland and Ibiza, and can say that without question that they’ve been some of the best nights we’ve had. The rapport that you can build with an HQ crowd in simply amazing! Other than that, though, we’ve got so many gigs which have been extra special to us, for example Sinergy in Manchester, and Solid Sunday in London. There’s too many to mention – they’re all great! DL: And lastly on a lighter note, if you were to use an alias for a particular track what would each of yours be? EUK: That’s an easy one – PG Tips.
