Sunday School - Review

Reported by Cosmic / Submitted 14-03-02 13:12

Thought about, Dreamed about and put into action, Sunday School is one of those rare things that come along every so often. From the start, the promoters of this great monthly Sunday afternoon/evening party were on to a winner. Combining a mixture of top London circuit Djs, an absolutely awesome crowd and a club that even by Sunday evening you still feel fresh due to the clean, well maintained environment, Sunday School has helped rewrite the monthly clubbing calendar.

I headed for the Hanover Grand just off Oxford Circus already late for DJ Dee-Licous who had already forgiven me for not catching her at Heat the day before. I was in trouble! Arriving just a little before five, I walked in to to hear Dee closing off what I was soon told a great warm up to the evening ahead. Already the dancefloor was busy, the edges and bar area a mecca for people to bounce around. Having only been once before, it felt great to be back, there's a real feeling of appreciation between clubbers there because everyone's made the effort to go-oh-so hard on a Sunday!

The Gorgeous Dee-Licous stepped down making way for Sylvian who I have met around once or twice but never heard. I love this guy, always wearing a smile and truly loving what he does, he played what was for me the set of the night. By 6:30 the club was busy and stepped up the pace, on the decks was the legend Dean Peters, (XLR8, Twisted resident and guest at just about every party out there). Dean played up to his usual standard of Hi-Energy bouncy Hard-House, (including tunes by Ilogik, (Hot Dam) and the Edison Factor Rmx of Paul Glazbys Stormer "Beautiful"). Dean worked his magic making sure that the silly grin wrapped around everyone's face was there to stay! The club was Rockin'!

Next up was the phenomenon that's currently got London clubbers hooked, ...Ali Wilson and Matt Smallwood. I chatted briefly with them both before playing and they told me things are good right now, busy, but good. Also they were both quite excited as they were to open there set with their new tune "Let The Games Begin" ...appropriate. These guys are serious, for two hours they jumped around like madmen behind the decks bangin out proper hard house. Word of warning to anybody due to see these nutters in the future on a Sunday... don't go out Saturday night! Have a spa break or holiday... anything, just get some calm before their storm!

The last set of the evening went to an old friend of mine and her b2b partner, Jo Shiva and Tara Reynolds. They started their set in great style, simply pressing the stop button with a satisfying swoosh sound and instantly dropping a huge anthem in the break, the name of which eludes me at this time! The pair stomped it up, dropping new and old classics to a rapturous audience, a little lighter than the boys before and they both had tunes which they were excited about playing. Tara, of course, giving the party a good workout to her own smash "Ignite" and then obliging her husband with an airing of his new tune with Nukleuz new boy Mark Richardson "Computer Logic" and "Vinyl Addiction". Jo not about to be upstaged by this performance in any way responded to her partner with Pumping Smooth Mixes of everyone's favourites including the new "Elasticman 12" and "Check This Out" - "Explode".

All in all, a Harder Education is what was billed and certainly what was received. My only concern is that is this what I was looking for on a Sunday Afternoon. Personally maybe not quite, but I will go again and again as the atmosphere and clubbers there are second to none!
