XLR8 to Brighton

Another 24 Hours of Insanity

The day warmed up nicely with lasers flashing, smoke billowing and Phil O’Delphia pumping. A Storm called ‘Laylah’ blew in and rocked Club 414 in preparation for the typical onslaught of Dean Peters. It was then that nutters thought the calm had come until… Storm ‘Lisa’ took over and gave us a taste of what the South had to offer, leaving us with a hunger for more!

Pedigree nutters then embarked on a crazy adventure - XLR8 to Brighton.

Much madness and silliness prevailed until the last two crazy’s were collected along the way – the two XLR8-R DJs that would rock Brighton - Matt Smallwood and Ali Wilson. What followed in the next 45mins is best kept between those 15 nutters (to save conviction and embarrassment!) but there will be warm memories of laughs and motorway stops, singing and tunes.

The first stop, after saving Jam Gorilla and re-uniting him with the group, was Liquid at the Font’n’Firkin. Within 3 tunes of the XLR8’s arrival they had Matt Smallwood on the decks showing ‘em just why he’s one of the UK’s most promising & talented young DJs, and boy did they lap it up.

A superb venue, in a pub with 180 degree balcony views that only Liquid is allowed to transfer into a stompfest. A great feel of peace & love amongst all (of course there’ll be no mention of drunken debauchery - Ali Wilson’s falling down the stairs doing the splits, or Matthew trying to hump the locals with a 3ft blow up schlong…). There were even Liquid Fairies (the promoter believe it or not!) and revellers totally up for Matt’s bangin’ tunes, a great party with lots of nice cold beer!

Before they knew it, 10pm had come and it was time to say goodbye to the Liquid Fairy and his friends and head over to ‘Storm’ at the Concorde. An awesome venue with 3 rooms, a pucka sound system and more bangin’ Brighton DJs.
Nutters felt right at home on arrival, XLR8 backdrops with glowing space hoppers lining the walls, and the open arms of yet another Brighton crew awaiting the onslaught. It wasn’t long before it hit, the night seemed to fly and debauchery had only just set in when it was time for Ali Wilson to take centre stage and blow Storm away during the last set.

Ali’s truly amazing set had all the answers - nutters bounced off the floor, off the walls and raised their arms to lift the roof sky high.

Storm provided colourful stilt walking robots and stage performers to add a touch of visual splendour, which the XLR8 nutters welcomed with open arms and wide eyes. They couldn’t be dragged down off the stage, even with robots firing lasers at them!

Come 2am and no-one was content to let Ali go, the screams were enough to blow the lights out on Brighton Pier. He lashed out the perfect tune so the crowd could float out the door and remember the night forever.

A quick flight home (in the mega-munters bus) and back to Club 414 to wind down, reflect and ponder the special moments they all just had together. The XLR8 DJs and nutters certainly left their mark in Brighton, and will definitely be going back for more!

If the nutters that embarked on this 24 hours of insanity weren’t warped before… well, the after photo says it all!

XLR8 runs weekly (except after Twisted events on Saturday night) on Sunday mornings at Club 414, Coldharbour Lane, Brixton.
