Convergence - Review

Reported by tom & shaezel / Submitted 27-11-01 12:29

On Friday night, nice and early, the harderfaster team arrived in Brixton to check out Convergence at Mass. As we've said before in past reviews, Mass is fast becoming our favourite club and here’s why: it has the space to fit a decent bunch, regularly hosts a good crowd, has two music rooms, both with places to sit down as well as a couple of small chill out rooms to chat and etc the night away Wink (Ed: please note we have no idea what is involved in 'etc' the night away). Billed as the event for those that like it just that little bit harder, we've always enjoyed tripping along to Convergence ever since the days when it was held at Crash in Vauxhall (some fantastic memories from there !), through the Rocket club in Holloway to it's current (ir)regular residency at the Fridge.

When we arrived at around 11.00pm the place was still fairly empty, which was a bit of surprise as we thought it would be at least half full by this time. But, about an hour later, after milling about, necking a few drinks and chatting to friends, the place had rapidly filled up and was beginning to resemble the club we know and love. Clearly the Convergence crowd had been detained in a few of the Brixton hostelries on the way from the tube, either that or they ended up at the Fridge on Saturday night after missing hearing about the venue change Crying (very sad)

We started off the night off in the Main room where Steve Hill was kicking things off by blending harder darker sounds at the start of the evening and steadily giving way to more uplifting tunes as his set progressed. Steve is the man responsible for some of the biggest hard dance tracks of the moment, with his work under various aliases such as Voltswagen with 'No Sleep' and 'Pacific Ocean', as Mr Bishi' (Tell Me) Toy Boy', a whole bundle of tracks as Dynamic Intervention and as Nylon with the awesome trance anthem 'If you love me'. Not exactly a shortage of talent and this was just one of the Convergence DJs playing tonight.

Steve is always a pleasure to watch as he clearly loves his work and shows it behind the decks. Back in the depths of my worryingly murky memory I remember Steve pogoing in front of the decks in the main room at Hard House Academy, takes confidence when there's 4,500 people watching but fortunately his synchronised dance moves put Britney to shame Wink As people steadily filtered into Mass during the course of his set so the tracks he was playing gathered pace and energy so that by the time he'd finished the club was charged and ready for the pandemonium to come.

The extra space at Mass gave the promoters the opportunity to present a second trancier room which is where we headed as Steve's set drew to a close to catch the start of James Lawson's turn behind the decks. We were treated to a consistently uplifting hard dance set which by the end was sending the crowd just completely mental and clearly James was enjoying himself as well.

Once Mr Lawson had left the decks we were pleased to see Matt Clarke take over and continue with the great music we had just experienced. He kept the crowd at a hard steady pace, with only a couple of uplifting tracks to start with, probably to save a few of the crowd from over-doing it and having heart attacks; over the next hour, he progressively brought it higher and higher, with some great hard trancy tracks and kept all of the crowd smiling and whooping like mad.

Checking my watch I was horrified Eek! to see it was 3:07pm, already we'd missed 7 minutes of one of Phil Reynolds' sets. Now Phil is one of our favourite DJs here at harderfaster for the simple reason that no matter who's been playing before him he can take the dancefloor to a whole new level of energy and plain ol' euphoria within minutes of stepping up to the decks. Tonight was no exception as he unleashed his trademark blend of driving hard uplifting house and trance onto the crowd who took one listen, decided they liked it and turned the dancefloor into a blurring dancing whooping throng. It was one of those sets that was over just far too soon and about which I have just one of those shocking memory gaps which I know means I've had a completely blinding time Big grin

At 4:30 Phil passed over the controls to BK, a man who puts even Steve Hill into the shade when it comes to the prolific level at which he turns out tracks. It's practically impossible to hear a hard dance set which doesn't feature an original tune or remix by BK, whether it's his funky-as remix of 'Let's Rock', his recent rejuvenation of the classic hard houser 'Injected with a Poison' or even his collaboration with Andy Farley on the awesome 'Khemikal Imbalance'. Frankly, when it comes to my old age (no sarky comments here or there'll be trouble), I'm going to be naming him as prime respondent in the insurance lawsuit against my healthcare costs for arthritis, back pains and the mental scars that I've borne from losing four inches in height from driving myself into the ground to his tunes Wink

BK's set was a steady progression from harder darker sounds to more uplifting tunes, now he might want to kill me for saying this but I'd almost describe it as progressive hard house Blush What I mean is that the hard, unrelenting sounds for the first half of his set prepared the dancefloor for the energy of the second. Like pressure contained within a bottle but without the uplifting sounds to release it, the energy on the floor steadily built up and as the hard trancers started washing in the place just started going ballistic as people relieved that pressure and thrashed themselves into exhaustion.

But all good things come to an end and at 6:00 we were towed back into reality for the closing number. Thanks to the organisers for putting on yet another top class night, sadly this was Convergence's last for 2001. While waiting for 2002 you could do alot worse than catch Frantic's Xmas party in two weeks time where we'll be assuming our regular position on the dancefloor and we are sooooo looking forward to catching up with you all again... till then keep Smile
