Hard House Academy Review

Reported by tom / Submitted 23-10-01 13:39

Let's just say that here at harderfaster we were looking forward to Hard House Academy just a little bit and I'm going to put you out of your misery if you didn't go and say that it was possibly the best one yet.

One thing that was scary about the night was just how fast it went, especially as the harderfaster crew arrived fairly late at just before midnight - a heavy night at Heaven on Friday night and an active day at the pre-party at Cyberdog to blame for that. For anyone who hasn't attended the pre-parties held at Cyberdog (Endorphin also run similar parties) we recommend you turn up, if only to see the stunned faces of the tourists when they wander innocently into a clothes store and witness a full-on hard house party in progress Smile

The Academy has got one thing totally sorted, and that's our most frequent complaint, the queuing outside the venue. For such a huge place they get people in very efficiently and I've seldom had to wait more than 10 minutes and Saturday night was no exception. Our second favourite whinge, the cloakroom queuing, was much better than the last HHA but still needs work.

Walking into the entrance foyer after dropping our things off was like hitting a wall of sound and energy, Nick Sentience had the ‘Storm Showcase’ absolutely thrashing with the music pumping, people dancing like maniacs and happy smiles everywhere, we had definitely arrived Big grin. As is now traditional we warmed up here to help prepare ourselves for the onslaught to come in the main arena, did a few cheeky stretches and tested the ol' dance routines out in front of the smaller crowd.

Our next mission was to track down the elusive 4th room at the Academy which had eluded us on previous visits. A little corridor off the foyer led off upstairs to the VIP area overlooking the main arena where James Lawson was playing a bangin' hard trance set that had the little dance floor in a furious mess of hard dancing happy faces.

Though we could see through the windows that things were going ballistic downstairs the tunes were too good to miss in there and it wasn't till 1:15 that we decided to drag ourselves back downstairs to catch Lab4 (or so we thought…).

If walking into the foyer was like hitting a wall, stepping through the double doors into the main arena was like having the same wall fall on top of you.

The place was heaving, the lighting was just stunning (a new high, even better than the lighting at Pickle which was the best we'd thought we'd seen at the Academy) and the bass was a physical thing just pulsing through the bodies on the dance floor. But where were Lab4 ??!! Yep, the set times were changed around from the advertised ones and we missed the headline live act, noice one boys !

But, we soon got over it as Yoji Biomehanika had things well and truly turned up, let's just say that this guy looks like a total psycho and plays like it too. Lots of tracks we didn't recognise but good to hear some new/different stuff.

One thing we'd noticed by this stage was that there was a definite 'hole' in the sound system especially towards the front of the stage in the centre, the bass was there but the treble didn't cut it, not sure what was causing this but it meant that area which was usually had the peak dance floor energy was not as good as usual.

We moved back to the Storm Showcase, which was still going off and mashed it up to the sounds of Karim while waiting for Phil Reynolds to make an appearance in the main arena.

Come 3:00am and Phil's appearance as usual signified a big jump up in the energy of the dance floor and this is where the evening becomes a big blur straight through Phil's set and into the hard house savagery of Andy Farley. The tunes were perfect, the crowd were 'avin it and it was sooooo good. Big grin

The end always comes far too quickly on nights like this, it felt like only minutes since 3am. Onto the afterparty ? That's another story Messy
