IN A WORLD where reality TV rules the box, England’s sporting credentials remain as dodgy as ever (Johnny Wilkinson & the boys aside) and ASBO is the most common christian name for a boy... Together attempts to break the mould as we present “Find Me a Superhero” on Saturday 24th November and a supernatural evening into the unknown. From last month’s Halloween spectacle, to the Military mission, Gameshow special and Village Fete… we’ve hosted our fair share of classic fancy dress parties this year. But this month we take the whole fancy dress theme to a whole new weird and wonderful world as the mighty Superheroes take on the evil Villains in a deadly battle to the figure-hugging-tights death!! Moving swiftly on…
For one night only, the main room will be transformed into Gotham City as we give the bats a well-deserved night off. Mega turntablist and superhero star James Lavelle headlines this one, having made an epic Together debut back in March, alongside fellow electronic pioneers Phil Hartnoll and Paul Daley. The man from UNKLE is back in more ways than one… with a new single ‘Hold My Hand’ doing well and 4th album ‘War Stories’ dropping in mid-November. A forthcoming sell-out show at the Roundhouse only confirms that UNKLE mean business, so to get James back behind the decks this month in between all that is something special. UNKLE aside, James is also responsible for cult 90’s label MoWax and can be found juggling his ever-busy global DJ schedule with on his on-going Surrender project, which combines a record label with a recording studio and clothing line. All is all, we’re very lucky to have him (back). Like all great superheroes, our next guests come as a duo! Alan Braxe & Kris Menace are two of the most respected names in the game and they star upfront at Together for the first time. Alan first made his mark in the late 90s with ‘Vertigo’, on Thomas Bangalter’s (Daft Punk) label Roulé. A few months later he co-produced Stardust’s ‘Music Sounds Better with You’ and in doing so, created one of the biggest dance records EVER! His own label followed (Vulture), as did more critical and chart acclaim for the release of another all-time anthem - ‘Intro’ (with Fred Falke). Meanwhile, Braxe’s partner in crime, Kris Menace is another high profile and prolific producer. His ‘Discopolis’ track, released on Braxe’s Vulture label, became one of the biggest anthems of 2005/2006 and he followed that up with the launch of his own label, Compuphonic and more cult releases including ‘Voyage’, ‘Jupiter’ and ‘Fairlight’. Between ‘em they’ve remixed everyone from Robbie, Kelis, Björk and Britney to Air, LCD Soundsystem and Goldfrapp. New for 2007 is ‘Lumberjack’ – the sublime Braxe/Menace single, with plenty more on the way. Watch out! Next up is another deadly double act in the shape of Crookers, the new kids on the fidget-house block from Italy. Chances are you’ve bounced to one of their remixes this summer from their phat ‘Wow Mix’ of The Chemical Brothers ‘Salmon Dance’, to Dusty Kid’s ‘The Cat’ and Armand van Helden’s ‘I Want your Soul’. There’s more of the good stuff on the way too with re-workings of Bumblebeez, Brodinski and Bonde do Role all set to drop. Gotham City also rejoices in the splendour that is Justin Robertson, Together’s dashing and debonair resident and Anil Chawla, our Global Underground signed tip for the top… who both unleash their own villain-ess mix of deep house and techno!
The much loved room under the stairs, T2 magically morphs itself into Smallville for the night… cos it’s small innit, and the crazy dancefloor antics will be brought to life by the Black Rabbit crew. Fronted by party starters Guy Williams and Bones, the Black Rabbits will be thumping their way back to Turnmills fresh from September’s sublime session with Ewan Pearson at the controls. By the power of music, they’ll be mutating a fine underground mix of sounds with We Love Sundays at Space resident Paul Woolford stamping his mark all over this one, together with Southern Fried Records hero and crazy cat – Cagedbaby. Kill Brique’s rising DJ/Producer Tommy Four Seven gets the night moving with the essential early bit.
Whatever your superpower, the invincible vibes continue down in the Metropolis aka T3, where XFM’s John Kennedy presents his final Midnight Ramble of the year, and boy did he save the best till last!! Having dropped many a jaw with acts like The Whip, The Teenagers, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, Get Shakes, Sneaky Sound System, Kissy Sell Out, Thee Earls and South Central taking to the stage in 2007; John has one final blow out up his sleeve featuring some of his fave acts of the year, alongside a couple of extra special treats throw in for good measure! One of those ‘goodies’ being Just Jack, the London singer/rapper who’s had major chart success this year with a Top 10 album ‘Overtones’, a No.2 single, ‘Starz in Their Eyes’ and a heavy touring schedule taking in all the major music festivals around the world. Jack grew up on a diet of breakdance, electro, hip hop and house and started Djing at the age of 15. He’s not another one of these live bands who’ve turned their hand to DJing for a few extra quid; he can actually mix it up with the best of ‘em and is sure to go down a treat with the Together faithful. The live action is this month left to Devils Gun, one of our fave bands of the moment. The London five-piece made an impressive dent on the festival scene this summer, with stand out shows at Get Loaded in the Park, Electric Gardens and Loch Ness to name a few. Tipped to join the UK electronic elite (Groove Armada, Prodigy, Faithless et al), their uniquely-crafted sound is topped off by frontman Jagger, one of the best in the biz!! The Kitsune-signed Punks Jump Up make it a hat-trick of Midnight Ramble sets for 2007, with John himself rinsing it out on the 1’s and 2’s. If you’re up for a giggle, then make sure you check out John’s final guests of the night - Men in Masks. The Mexican-mask-wearing DJs not only throw down the craziest party beats on the planet, but they also double up their sets with a good ol’ fashioned wrestle! Now, you don’t get to see that every day!! The final piece of the musical jigsaw is completed upstairs in Castle Grayskull, where fab London crew High Heels take no prisoners with their underground soundtrack. DJs include Matt von Holtz, Matthieu-F, Criz-po, Kuency, Roman Höff, Solo and Warmupper.
Together’s ‘Find Me a Superhero’ party wouldn’t be complete without showing a marathon of cult movies in the Cinema Lounge. So head on over to Together’s Institute for Higher Learning to view everything from Batman to Danger Mouse, Spiderman to Bananaman, Wonder Woman to Super Gran!! The fancy dress final will be held in John Kennedy’s Midnight Ramble room, where prizes include a host of Superhero memorabilia, plus some wonger to spend at London’s Forbidden Planet store. Marvel-ous.
